Has anyone used these adapters and what are your thoughts.
I am looking to get one to be able to use my Tokina 400 f5.6 lens on my Nikon D5500. I know I will need to put the camera in manual mode and to manually focus. I am mostly looking to use this for birding and nature shots.

I don't have experience with the adapters but I do have experience shooting birds with a DSLR and manual focus and unless you're shooting large relatively stationary birds like eagles or great blue herons, manual focus is not that much fun. Smaller birds are almost constantly in motion and without autofocus, they can be a real challenge to photograph with a DSLR. I hope the adapter works out for you.

I have a fotodiox adapter to use my Mamiya Sekor medium format film lenses on my Nikon dslr's. Used in manual mode it works fine. My adapter is solid, mounts with a distinctive click, doesn't slip, and works perfectly. For about $30 it lets me use those Mamiya film lenses on any of my Nikon dslr's.

I have Fotodiox Nikon mounts on several Leica R lenses, which focus to infinity with no corrective lens, and adapters for M42 and Exakta to Nikon. They're well made of plated brass, fit perfectly with no play. The corrective glass is multi-coated and my slides look very sharp and contrasty under a 10X loupe, should be fine for at least 13x19 inch prints once I digitize them. I can recommend the adapters.
I have a Nikon mount Tokina 400 f/5.6 AT-X AF, about as good as they come, but manually focusing flying birds will be a challenge. Good luck!

No, you will not be able to manual adjust focus as you swing this big lens around as the subject is moving. You would be wasting your money.

I know it will be a challenge. I used this lens on my Pentax ME Super for years doing some bird photos. Yes it is big and it took me some time to get used to rapidly focusing. I did a lot of prefocusing when I saw birds and estimated their flight pattern. Sometimes it worked, other times not so much.

Thank you all for your input.
For the price, I think I will try it. Maybe in the future I may spend the big money and buy one made for the Nikon with AF.

i bought a fotodiox adapter to use pentax lenses on a nikon [ D300 and 70 ] . you dont notice a lost of sharpness , i used it on close up and normal photo , with fixed and zoom lenses .the only bad problem is that in outdoor with sun shine you will ens up with a halo in the middle of picture .even with sun in back , and using a generous sun shade, the lenses in the adapter have zero coating ] .i also have the tokina 400mm 5.6 , it is descent , but i noticed that when taking pictures at minimum distance , the sharpness is not good .[ humming birds ].taking pictures at distance , it is nice .

I used it for the Hawks and eagles that would frequent my old property. Good for closeup of the deer coming out of the woods.

This Fotodiox Pentax K to Nikon adapter is multi-coated:

I have this multi-coated one for Exakta lenses:

My adapter for M42 lenses is multi-coated as well, although B&H does not list it now. I would never buy or recommend any adapter with a correction lens that was not multi-coated.

I have several Fotodiox adapters (because they're cheap) for all kinds of different lenses to use on my Canon's and I never had any kind of issues, used them for years!

I use a Fotodiox (purchased from B&H) Olympus to Canon EOS adapter on a 400mm f5.6 Vivitar Series I telephoto (circa late 70's early 80's). And it works great. The connection/mount is firm and not wobbly/loose and the one I ordered has the chip that my camera beeps when focus (manual) is achieved. But everything is manual, including setting the aperture. I find the resolution of this lens to be less than stellar however. But then again, it was not a top-of-the-line way back when and it was designed for lower resolution film than what digital affords us today. Still, I am happy with it, the adapter.

I like the price of the adapter compared to buying the equivalent lens for the digital just to have AF. I am used to manual focus as that is all my Pentax was. I still manual focus the D5500 sometimes as I find it easier for some situations.
Thanks to everyone for their input.

usually when you look at a multicoated lens , you see a certain tint to it , this adapter is clear . its too bad because in my case , it is well made and work fine , just dont use it out door on a bright day .flash indoor has no issues .the spot look like a clear donnut at center of picture , does not natter what kind of lens you use . maybe it s only doing it on pentax mount to a nikon camera .did comunicate with the importer , sent him some samples , he has no idea ??? . solved the problem by buying a used pentax dlsr body .
