Hi everyone!

I'm very excited as I just purchased the Sony a6300 body. I know there are some here who shoot with Sony, and I was looking for advice on lenses. I have about $4500 that I can spend on lenses for this camera, and because it's main use is video I have to cover a good portion of the spectrum. I'm considering the 24-70 f/2.8 G Master lens, the 70-200 f/4 G lens, and a really good low light wide to standard prime. The non-video stuff I shoot is street, and composite elements.

So I'm wondering is what lenses would any of you recommend? It what do you own or have used? I'm looking to keep it limited to lenses that do not require adaptors. But other than that what lenses would you get for that price range?

Since you are planning to use it mainly for video I would consider the 28-135mm It will set you back a good part of your total budget but it is a probably the only lens you need for video.
For high-end low light prime I would look at the 55mm 1.8 or one of the loxia lenses which are great for video (clickless aperture)
You may need to set some money aside for a mic. / cage / led video light etc.

Forgot to mention that this lens is parfocal
A great benefit for video. The ones you mentioned are not parfocal.

I didn't realize that! That's a good heads up. As far as the other gear, I already have a ton of audio gear and a fair selection of everything else. I just haven't used the Sony system in a while! This will be another B camera, and ideally my main carry around camera. Thanks for the response!

Is this an a for classic "A" Alpha AF lenses (starting in 1985) or their new "a" which means nothing?

I'd suggest that if your primary use is video that you buy a video camera. Some are quite small and take high-quality stills as well. This is a larger one, but if you like Sony there are lots of others to choose from, also Canon, Panasonic and JVC. For $4,500 you can have the A6300 with a lens or two (or a Sony DSC‑RX100 IV) and a dedicated camera built for video. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1135567-REG/sony_pxw_x160_xdcam_hd422_camcorder_25x_zoom.html/url Yes, still cameras have become video-capable, but you wouldn't choose a Swiss Army knife if your primary needs were for a saw and a screwdriver.

The answer is also dependent upon whether or not you want the lenses to be able to upgrade (?) to Full Frame sensor or not. If not, my favorite lens is the 18-105 EZ Sony "G" glass lens. This lens is great for video as it has an electric zoom that is silent, and stays in focus well as you zoom. The optics are wonderful for stills as well. This is my most important lens for all events!

i would avoid sony's proprietary lenses, as these are made by tamron. i would go with minolta's older af lenses. for your spectrum you might want to research 35mm f1.4, 100mm f2, the 300 and 400 af 2.8 lenses. along with their excellent 20mm f2 and 24mm f2 and last but certainly not least, the 200mm macro af lens. that should take care of your $4,500. and the glass on all of these is spectacular. minolta made their own glass and e leitz (leica) regularly use minolta glass in their own lenses dating back from 1972.

So I'm wondering is what lenses would any of you recommend? It what do you own or have used? I'm looking to keep it limited to lenses that do not require adaptors. But other than that what lenses would you get for that price range?

You might want to read this article about photo cameras and parafocal lenses.

I am in full agreement with this - I also have the 18-105 EZ G lens and I have had nothing else on the a6000 since I purchased it.

Your words; "The non-video stuff I shoot is street,":
For "candids" and "snaps" (the term "street" seems to be arguable, headed towards *meaningless) ~ I find the 24mm f/1.8 (36mm equiv), and the 30-35mm f/1.8 ("nifty fifty" equiv) primes to be my most often used in a "walk and draw" type of street shooting (especially in low light), with the a6000. For me, the zooms are too slow to get into action, and the lenses are too "slow" ~ fast zooms too physically large, cumbersome, and noticeable (intimidating to others?).
The 50-55mm's (75mm) more usable in portrait-type street shooting, and indoors, across the table from the subject; however, often too tight for many "street" situations.

I like zooms for touring, but some of the most oft advised are too large for my "walkabout" purposes.

*Disclaimer: The "Graham Smith's" on this site might make my little rookie narrative "meaningless".
