Hi Folks; Possible to get some good instructional material advice for "On camera" flash techniques ?
I just can't seem to get it consistently right. :(
I'm shooting with D7100 and Nikon 910. Auto/TTL works, but getting creative in manual is driving me nuts.
Any suggestions from the pros would be appreciated.
Thanks

For manual flash the procedure is:
1 Guess
2 Shoot
3 Chimp
4 Adjust
5 Go back to 2 until you get good result in 3.

If you are talking about the pop up flash, then bdk is right, don't use it. For a good source on flashes on or off camera, check out Neil Van Neikirk's tangents website. It has a lot of good flash technique tutorials

Flash photography is fun, creative and addictive. You can use your D7100's built in flash to trigger your 910 off of your camera for added effects. Here is a web site that will help you learn, it really taught me a lot.

The pop-up flash works great.... as a commander for a remote speedlight like the SB 910.
Look at these recent threads for more info: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-374646-1.html

As NormanHarley said, Strobist is a great resourse for OFF CAMERA flash. Try to avoid using your 910 on camera if at all possible. Even moving the flash just a few inches up and to the side on a flash bracket will improve the results.

"On camera" flash techniques dictate that you disable that unit and get speedlites.

I got Bryan Peterson's book "Understanding Flash Photography" It has a lot of different techniques. He has a great technique for getting even exposure between the background and when there's someone close to the camera by putting both the camera and flash in manual mode.

Or buy a flash meter if you can find one. Are they still available? Had mine for years.
