Canon 6D dilema-or not!

A camera store fairly local to me has a used Canon 6D body on sale for £850 boxed, mint condition and only a 490 shutter count. I have enough from a tax rebate to add the F4 24-70mm L zoom to it.

I have the 7D mk2 and would like a full frame for landscape/low light photography. So go for it?

Thanks for any help.

Tempting. You want it, and you can afford it. Those are the two top qualifications I always check before I buy. The longer you wait, the greater the chance someone else will "snap" it up.

I compared the 5D III to the 6D.
The features of the 5D III far outweigh what the 6D has to offer for me. I was able to get a used 5D III from my dealer and have been very pleased with it.

The full frame is nice for wide angle. 24mm on the FF is wider than 18mm on the crop. I jumped from a 50D to the 6D. It took a little getting used to not having all of the buttons handy but once I learned how to use the Q and info buttons it is actually pretty handy. I like my 6D but I don't shoot sports or BIFs but your 7D will handle that just fine. I held on to my 50D for that stuff for a while but just didn't use it enough so I gave it away. on the 6D I do use the Wi-Fi quite a bit and when I get out to do any serious landscape I will use the GPS just so I can relocate where I took a shot. I bought mine used last September and I use it almost everyday and it has been fine. Hope this helps.

The first 2 posts above both make sense. So, the second one first. Does the 5D have features that would enhance your 'landscape' photography? If yes, it is something to consider.

Otherwise, re-read what Jerry said and go for it. :)

Video importance????

The 6D originally had a problem in video... "moire patterns" and Aliasing in video. In fact there were third party solutions to this, which installed in the camera came to about $300 to #400. These came about as Canon was not forthcoming with a fix. I do not know if Canon fixed this, but the aftermarket solutions sold because Canon was not forthcoming on the problem.

Granted, not a huge problem, but would clearly impact value on resale of the 6D for those who purchased primarily for video.

Also, don't know the current status of the problem, but it is one of the reasons the MkII and MkIII 5D's have a higher value.

The price on the 6D is impacted in favor of those who are planning to use the 6D in "still" imaging only.

It is a known fact that the 5D's are ranked much better on video.

HERE: is a post on Photo.net that discusses the "moire" issue, and in the first post talks about the 5d MkIII superiority in this area, and lists a link for one of the "fixes" from a third party....Mosaicengineering.com.

So, while one may purchase a 6D based on price and it's excellent reviews for "stills", a concern may be resale value based on this chronic known issue for video.

I have been looking hard at the 6D myself and have looked at differences between 6D and 5D Mark III. I feel the differences are (for me) minor enough that if I could get the 6D for a lot less money, I would. The 6D has fewer AF points and slightly slower shutter speed, and 6D only has one SD card slot.

Both are magnesium frames. However, the 6D has a few things the 5D III does not have, such as built-in GPS and built-in WiFi. For some that may be important. Is the 5D III a better camera? - by a few measures probably yes, but the question you have to ask - and no one else can answer this for you - is whether these minor differences are worth 40% more in price.

The camera you mention, with so few shutter actuations, sounds like a good deal. If you get at and decode later that you'd rather have additional; AF points and slightly after shutter speed, you could always sell the 6D.

By the way, I also have the 7D MII which gives me the fast shutter speed and more AF points for shooting BIF and sports. For what you say you would use it for, the 6D would be a great addition .

Congratulations.

I hope when I check back Sunday evening I'll see some beautiful landscapes posted. ;)

Why ask us? You know what we are going to say. You are a big boy, you want something? Can you afford it? Is it illegal? Will it ruin your health or rot your teeth? Do you want it? Why are you asking? You will have a really fun kit with those two bodies and the additional lens you plan on getting. Do you really need our permission? Break the rules and splurge. Do it for yourself! Enjoy! Just read your acceptance post. Well done! Hope you have great adventures shooting with both your new toys.

You made a good decision, IMO. I have both the 6D and 7DII and they compliment each other quite well. As far as all the comparisons to the 5DIII, the IQ and high ISO capabilities are pretty much identical. The 6D will actually focus at lower light levels then the 5DIII. The biggest advantage of the 5DIII is the much more capable auto focus, which doesn't really mean much for landscapes, portraits, etc. For action shots the 5DIII is considerably superior to the 6D, but the 7DII more then makes up for that. For what you want it for the 6D will do it as well as the 5DIII, for less money and less weight. Enjoy! It's a fine camera.

I think you will enjoy it. I think in your case in your anything the 6D lacks can be done with the 7D. In my case I haven't missed the 50D.
