Yes, it does appear to be either a tripod or a mono. However, from personal experience you sometimes don't have time to set a tripod up, or you don't have time to attach a plate on the camera in order to get a quick shot of something special, so you use whatever you have available to steady your camera. It's much quicker just to say "stand still" than to say pass me my mono. It usually works quite well unless your new tripod gets excited 😜.

Not a tripod, what you have here is a very rare Quadrapod. The only thing better is a bikini Quadrapod.
