Does the Nikon D750 have self-contained Wi Fi communication capabilities or does it require an external device as well? The advertisement or brochures are not very clear.

The camera has internal Wi-Fi.

From the D750 Users Manual, p281:

The camera can connect via Wi-Fi wireless networks to a smart device running Nikon’s dedicated Wireless Mobile Utility app. The smart device can be used to control the camera and take pictures remotely, or pictures can be downloaded from the camera to the smart device and shared with others on the Internet. Pictures can also be uploaded from the camera to the smart device.

Wi-Fi Functionality - Yes (Built-in)

The best place to look is Nikonusa.com, select your product and scroll down to tech specs.

I was able to download and use the Nikon wmu app on my Android phone and connect to my D5300. I can't find it for my ipad, though. Does anyone know if there is one?

I did get it to work on my iPad 2 Air. It was a while ago that I did it, but it might be the same app as for the iPhone.

Can you provide the name of the App? I want to use it on my iPad Air2. I couldn't find it in the store.

It is called the Nikon Wireless Mobile Utility. It is free. Below is a link to it on the App Store.

Thanks! I was able to download it directly from your link.

It is the same as the Android one. Surprised my search didn't find it. But now I'm good to go. I'll probably use it more with the ipad. One thing I like doing with is setting the camera next to the bird feeders; esp. When the Hummers come around.

The Nikon WMU has limited capabilities. It can activate the auto focus, fire the shutter and download pictures to the iPad/phone. The CamRanger can do those things as well as change camera settings, set up interval shooting, and with a motorized tripod head it can aim the camera for you.

But it ain't free!

In your D750 you would turn wifi on. Then go to your "iphone" and set your wifi connection to your Nikon camera. Now the camera can send photos to the camera, and from the iphone you can select pictures. You will need to download the "Nikon WMU app" and use the app.

Great!

Sounds like you will get some good humming bird shots that way.
