Hello everybody, I am a keen beginner who has just joined my local Camera Club. I use a bridge camera (Finepix S2500) and have found that the club is equally divided between Nikon DSLR's and Canon DSLR's. But I am still reasonably happy with my Fuji.
We have monthly themed competitions and weekly themed critiques and the other members are very helpful (except when asking 'What camera should I buy? '

Hi Tony.
Both Nikon and Canon are pretty equal in just about everything. I would go to a real camera store and play with them and see which one feels the best in your hands. And look at the buttons and dials to see if they fit your hands. Or if the guys at the club would let you play with theirs, is another option. Nikon and Canon both have awesome glass. I shoot Nikon and have for a long time. A lot of old lenses that still work on my D300s. Both have about the same price range for each model. So it really gets down to what your budget is to the quality of camera you get. And starting with the lower models, still will get you awesome pictures with either brand.

Wooops - why do you "Have to buy" a DSLR - are you photos not getting praise because of the clearity or is it the compsition. are you skilled in digital editing? Know any of the quick tips to add "snap" to your photos. Lear more of this befor you jump for a DSLR
Don't buy a new Jaguar when you Auston is just fine.

I have found this in most groups - fly fishing, camera and 4X4 off road vehicles - I drive a stock 89' Bronco and go the same places the fellow take their $80M custom 4X4's my $60 fly rod & 12 fles catches the same amount and size trout as the as the $600 rod and 1,000 fly box.

Welcome to the UHH TonyB...I agree with what Erv has said about going to a camera store and play with the different cameras. I too shoot a Nikon and am very pleased with it. Good luck in your decision. I'll look forward to seeing some of your photos....

I agree with you Harvey. My cousin said to learn with a Kodak Brownie before buying a Hasselblad and what was good for film also applies to Digital. My main problems with the Bridge are a] the lens only has two stops at each focal length. b] No thread on lens for using filters and c]quite a delay between pressing shutter and the camera taking picture. I think I will keep my Fiji and look around for a second-hand Nikon D5100 for learning on

Thanks Erv, I agree and tried out some models at our local camera store. The Sony A77 was the most comfortable in hand, but too expensive and the Canons felt wrong somehow but I liked the Nikons and the buttons seemed to be in the right place.
But for now I will continue with the Fuji which takes very satisfactory pictures although I still have a lot to learn about composition.

It is always nice to have new things. But I still love the D300s I have. And I am still learning digital. It will be some time before I do an upgrade to the new D800. To many great lenses I would like to get first. They will help me more than a body would. As long as I see improvements in my pictures I am happy.

A body is a body and one can replace one reasonably to a different brand.
However, the lenses are a different story. Once you invest in a particular brand of lenses, it's pretty cost prohibitive to change brands at that point.

From your answer I think you are above the bridge camera in skill and knowledge - indeed follow some advice from those using DSLRs good shooting and post some of your works

Mr. Tony B ...Never worry about what other people say about cameras. Use the the one that suits you best and forget about the rest. I have used many systems in the past and found many to be more than adequate for the job. Presently and for the past 50+ years have been a Nikon film user. Recently just to keep up with the latest technology I purchased a Canon 5D Mark II...I shoot both Nikon and Canon and see no major differences in my work. Each camera system however has some different bells and whistles and are nice but...there is always a but ! Have fun enjoy your hobby and "Tally HO ".
