What A Discovery

I use Astrophotography Tool - APT when I image with my Atik 383l OSC camera. It has an interface very similar to Backyard EOS and a few more bells and whistles.

I just discovered one of the many whistles. There is a FLATs AID, in the TOOLS section that will calculate the ADU range and correct exposure.

Heretofore, I just selected the fastest exposure time assuming it was probably now fast enough. I just got the best flats I have ever taken using this AID.

This software is very very clever!

Thanks for sharing, I can use all the help I can get. I'll give it a try when I get my camera back. Did you purchase or are you on the trial?

I bought it sometime back. I rarely use the Atik as the two DSLR's I am using are far superior...and my DSLR's are nikon and not supported by ATP. Canon only and CCD's.

But - taking flats has been a pain with the CCD in the past and this aid worked like a charm. I did get some nice data and images last night.

I think there is a lot more buried in these programs than we realize.
My problem is comprehension and retention. I have to "get my hands dirty" to mine out the how and why of the operations.

Makes me envious of Jim H's Atik Infinity and it's stack on the fly assembly of the images.
Building right before your eyes.

I saw something similar on a web site where I guy ran his own live program (Maybe a YouTube thing?).
He went through the set-up and alignment, which was the meat and potatoes. But when he took the video inside, the camera was click, click, clicking making an image of Orion's Nebula in real time. Maybe 1-3 second exposures?
The live view image being broadcast was a continuous stacking live. (Or it appeared to be, since it was a web cast)
