Howeve

Release the bbf before you recompose, otherwise the autofocus is still active and tracking

You need to set your focus point so it falls on a "rule of thirds" location.

if you are shooting a moving object, such as a child in motion, one way I do it to follow the rule of thirds, is make sure there is room in front of the object, then crop to fit my needs in post processing. and yes, you need to hold down the bbf button to track the movement. you do not need to recompose, but you do need to stand back far enough that there is plenty of room around your subject to adjust in post processing

Right ... and the subject would be on a "rule of thirds" location, same place I told him/her to locate his focus point.

However, if I do the same thing and want to recompose, say a kid is moving and I want to use the rule of thirds, do I hold down the BB and focus and keep holding it down and recompose, and it's still in focus? Do I keep my finger on the BB while pressing the shutter release? Thanks

It depends on how you have your AF set up. If you have AF-S set, the focus will lock when you press the BBF button ( the AE-L/AF-L button)and stay locked, whether you keep your thumb on it or not, until you press it again. If you have AF-C set, the focus will lock when you press the BBF button and continue to refocus as you recompose or when your subject moves. So if you use only the centre focus point, as I do, you can set it to AF-C, focus on the subject, remove thumb from BBF button, recompose and shoot. If you are taking pictures of wildlife and the subject starts to move you just keep your thumb on the BBF button and shoot when you like. Watch the Tony Northrup video on You Tube for a demonstration.
