Tail feathers are washed out, and I just can't get by with taht tree in the background bisecting the head

It is good, and one I would hang onto ... until you look back on it some day and see that you have moved from good to great.

Using a flash, even if you think you are out of range, might lighten the underside enough that you can reduce exposure enough to get more detail in the tail.

If you shot in RAW, you may find you have some detail you can draw out in post processing.

Just keep shooting and having fun.
