Yes, I understand that, and that is exactly the point. Photography Step 1 (for me at least) is to find the exact camera locations, or perspective(s), desired. Step 2 is to frame and crop exactly as desired in-camera using a good zoom. Assuming you don't have a prime lens of the exact needed focal length, the only choices are to move from your desired location (perspective) or crop in PP, neither very satisfactory to me.

I apologize. It sounded like you indicated one would change perspective by zooming to a different field of view - which, of course, does not happen.

Oh my, no apology needed. I did mostly large format (4x5) prior to going digital, and learned to pick camera locations very carefully. I usually spend more time trying to find the right location than actually taking the picture.

The 70-200 is a good suggestion. If this is going to be a top end lens,
For example an " L " for Canon it will be very heavy.

I'm considering switching from zoom lenses to primes for an upcoming trip to Europe. 3 prime lenses (28,50 and 85) should be much faster, sharper and lighter than the zooms they replace. What I want is some sort of 'preview' device to use to determine what each focal length will look like without mounting it on the camera. In the past, I've found I wind up mounting each lens to preview the shot. This results in much lens fumbling, etc. I think I've seen film directors with a small lens around their neck which I assume is for that purpose, but I can't find anything offered for sale. Any ideas?

Hi,

Not sure where you're going or what kind of shape you're in, I suggest you limit what you carry. I've been fortunate enough to be able to travel. Even though I have great lenses and camera bodies I don't bring everything. Actually I limit myself to three lenses. 50mm f1.4 for speed and low light, 16mm-35mm f4 for wide angle and 28mm-300mm for everything else. I know there's a bunch of people out there who doesn't like the 28mm-300mm but I don't care what they think. Just MHO

Thanks Gene51... appreciate the support. Our photography histories may be somewhat similar.

No doubt!

There are snapshooters and there are real photographers - for us, it's really easy to tell the difference. :)
