An interview with jvcookies,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
From childhood

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No Formal Training..self taught with practice, online forums, books and DVDs

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
The subject, lighting and composition come together.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Canon 7D and one studio flash aimed high into an umbrella...this was left to me by a friend.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Yes with Photoshop CS6...fist upload to BRIDGE, make minor adjustments, open in PHOTOSHOP add a slight blending layer and an slight unsharp layer. In a picture lie this one that has a soft subkect, I like to put the image on a whit background and remove the edges with a soft eraser brush.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I enjoy taking pictures of people and try to bring out a special quality. This little girl was having a birthday and I wanted to present her like a princess....she had her favorite stuffed animal...I ased her to give it a hug and that is when I snapped the picture.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
i LIKE IT THE WAY IT IS.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
LEARN TO SEE THE LIGHT!

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My little cross body pouch where I keep the camera lens, my car keys and the cell phone.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I love my 70-200 for the blur effect in the background...when I get that right.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
My camera flash and the Gary Fong Diffuser

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Hike in the woods

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Just that I have met the most interesting people when I have my camera with me...the bigger the lens...the more conversations!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Don't leave home without your camera...because when you do...that is when the best photo opportunities happen!

An interview with plessner,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I feel like I have always had a camera in my hands!

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have no training--took a class from a friend back in the 80s when I bought my first 35mm camera. I enjoy all types of photography, and snap at most anything!

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
A first impression that makes me say "OH WOW"

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I was recently in Norway with a group of friends for a 3 week photography trip. I took this photo on our last day there as we had some time, before a late afternoon flight, to catch the train to downtown Oslo. The streets were full of people and it was a very relaxed atmosphere. There were people playing instruments along the sidewalk with a money box sitting in front of them looking for donations, as two others were carving a castle out of snow they had hauled in a and wanted a donation in trade for a picture of it.. I happened to notice this man and his dog, wrapped in a blanket-as it was kind of chilly out, leaning on a lamp post having a nap.
I use a Sony A65 and did not have my tripod along for the distance I figured we would be walking that day.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
As of now I use picassa and just worked on the lighting a bit and cropped this photo. It was kind of a harsh sunny morning.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Street photography was never something I had done a lot of, but some challenges focusing on it here on UHH kind of opened my mind to the many photo possibilities that can be found on a busy street.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I took this rather quickly and I don't think my focus is all that sharp!

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How much fun digital would be! I resisted giving up my film camera for a long time

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
I love my 18-250mm lens covers a lot of possibilities

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
the one mentioned above

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
don't usually do any shooting that requires special lighting

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I have retired my home based craft business to have more time for photography and spending time with the grandkids

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
too many to go into!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
my flicker page is posted here on UHH

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
keep shooting and have fun with it
