I found this article to be full of good, common sense information. I was actually out in Brugge last fall with the author of this article. Please take the time to watch the short video embedded in the article. Andy actually pulled this stunt with me. Even though he gave me a warning, he did it so quickly that i was open-mouthed stunned. He did give me my 55-300 lens back. I now hold my camera in such a way that a thief will not be able to do this for real.

Yes, it was fast. Andy used a slightly different method when he showed me how quickly and easily a lens could be removed from a camera by a thief. We were walking along side by side. He remarked that with the way I was carrying my camera someone could just steal my lens and run off. I think my reply was something along the lines of "show me". Next thing, Andy leaned into me as though to tell me something. His hand went to my lens release. Next thing I knew he had my lens and said a real thief would have just run off. It was probably no more than a second. Quite the wake up call! Now I carry my camera with one hand on the lens if it's exposed outside my jacket/coat/vest.

Definitely. Andy also mentions the Lenstag site in his article. I am not sure how that system works if it is only the lens that is stolen, though.

Thanks Mike, I had no idea how easy that could happen, and am very prone to being distracted! Must try to be much more aware and keep one hand on lens when possible.

You are very welcome. Personally, I never gave a thought to someone ripping off ONLY a lens attached to my camera. Thought if I'd never given it a thought, there were others out there like me.

BTW, my time out and about with Andy (Photo Tour Brugge) was excellent. He is knowledgeable and patient and really knows and loves his town. It was well worth my investment of time and money. If you ever get the chance to go to Brugge, see if you can book some time with Andy.
