Hi,
Please help if you can! I am on the first day of a trip to Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia. Today we were in the rainforest and I was photographing a tanager when suddenly my D7100 didn't work. A blinking "Err" message came on the LCD screen and it sounds like the shutter is very slow. The problem exists when I change lenses or have no lens on at all. I asked for some uncooked white rice at lunch and I'm going to try desiccating the camera in case humidity was the problem. Does anybody have any suggestions that I can try while on my voyage. I am heartbroken!

Never tried it, but maybe a hair blow drier on low speed. Probable best warming the back of the camera body slowly with the lens off and pointed down to keep contaminants from entering.
Hope this helps and have wonderful tip.

I mean a F5, not a hairdryer!

One of the most reliable film cameras ever made. Sorry I cannot offer any help for your D7100, hopefully someone else will. I feel for your situation. What a bummer!

You may have accidentally unlocked the aperture lock on your lens. Check your lens for a small switch towards the low end of the aperture range. Manually set aperture to the smallest setting, and then flip switch to 'lock' position, where you will see an orange line indicating 'locked'.
DO NOT BLOW HAIRDRYER INTO YOUR CAMERA.
Unfortunately the aperature lock is not the problem. The manual which I have on my Ipad says to contact An Authorized Nikon center. Yippee, so much for my photography trip!

This is still me, the same person. I couldn't get on the ship's wifi before so had to use their computer. I didn't remember my UHH name and password so I needed to make a new account. The WIFI is working now, however.

I suspect you've already gone down this road, but I would 1) turn the camera on and off a few times, 2) swap out your memory card, maybe more than once, 3) change lenses, 4) re-set to factory settings, and 5) double check all dials, especially those that can be locked in one position or another.
Sorry you're having difficulty. I'm racking my brain, trying to remember the cause when this has happened to me. I am sure it was the aperture lock one time, but maybe something else another.
EDIT: My mistake. Aperture lock message is fEE. Owner's manual say flashing 'Err'="camera malfunction- if message persists or appears frequently, have it serviced by authorized Nikon service".

BEFORE YOU USE A HAIRDRYER......
A stream of air blown on the back of a flat square-edged structure such as your camera can create an air flow traveling in a generally circular motion on the opposite side, blowing air into the camera. Also, realize that hairdryers simply heat and blow ambient air, which can be high in humidity. Before using a hairdryer on your camera body, use a body cap to keep air out of the interior of the camera.
Perhaps someone educated in aerodynamics can explain this better than I can.

The "err" message is a general alert to a number of possibilities. The first thing to try is to clean the contacts on both the camera and lenses and make sure the lens is correctly seated. If that doesn't work, try a factory re-set. I suspect humidity.
Hope you figure something out.
Take out battery & re install.

I had this on my D200. Ended up being the memory card. Otherwise, maybe you should go buy a cheap PS.
The only time I have ever had 'Err' display was on a D100 and that was a CF card problem. Try swapping out the cards. I'm feeling your anguish.
