OMD EM1 battery grip "help!"

I recently gave in to my GAS and purchased from Amazon the OMD EM1, 12-40 f/2.8 pro lens, and the HLD 7 battery grip. I'm having fun exploring the menus and the manual, but I'm having an issue with the grip, and I'm hoping someone familiar with these things can tell me if it's me, some software setting I'm missing, or if I need to return it.

When I first put on the grip it worked fine for a few minutes (I was just sitting at my desk checking out all the controls and settings,) and when I turned it off and back on, the whole camera went dead. As soon as I took the battery out of the compartment in the grip, everything was fine. No matter what I've tried, I can't get the rig to work with a battery in the grip, which is half the reason I bought the thing. I updated the firmware last night, before I first tried out the grip.

Can anyone please tell me if there's anything I can do? The camera recognizes the grip, because all the buttons work , and I can program the different functions for them in the menu.

This will probably not be the only question I ask from you experienced M 4/3 shooters.....

I never use grips so I can't help you but you may want to post your question @ www.mu43.com. Where did you get the gear from?

I had grips that had bad battery contacts, maybe that is your problem. I would just exchange it if still within the time.

Thanks. It's less than a week old--I'll probably do that.

Had this happen to me, make sure that the battery is seated properly in it's tray. I'm not using the same grip, but have several. Most common frustration is putting the battery in while in a hurry and it seem to be in place in the holder when it actually is not.

NTBASM, but did you turn it on? Or off?

I tried it multiple times. With this grip, the battery only goes in one way, and clicks nicely into place.

I have returned the grip to Amazon and ordered another one.

No problem, smart mouth....

Yes, turned the camera on and off, tried different batteries, tried it with battery in grip and not in camera. In every instance, the camera was dead off with a battery in the grip.

Also searched the menus extensively, and the 1 paragraph (barely) instruction manual, looking for clues, but I finally concluded the darn thing just doesn't work.

Which is what I figured, but since I'm totally new to this system, I was hoping someone familiar with Olympus m4/3
could point out some user error on my part. I seem to recall some mention in a recent thread where you could set the camera to work mainly off the grip battery, but I've found no such option in the menu. Maybe it was for a different system, I don't remember for sure.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I ordered a new one from Amazon.

You can use the camera with the battery only in the grip. I have a EM-1 with a generic grip and I only use it with the battery in the grip. That way I don't have to remove it to change the battery, I like it for the feel not just to have extra power

Yeah, I like the grip, wish it weren't so tall, but the feel in the hand is great. Is there any menu setting for assigning batteries that way, or do you just put them in and fire away?

I will probably use two batteries, but I wouldn't mind if it mainly used the one in the grip, and just had the other one for backup.

These things definitely go through batteries faster than my Nikons!

If only in the grip you do nothing and it works. If using both batteries you can assign which one is used first and then the other takes over.
