I' been interested in photography since I was a kid. Got a kodak black box camera as a gift and dabbled in photography ever since.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Most of my recent exposure has been with UHH , I did take an on line course or two over the past few years and upgraded my Computer and soft ware, too! I try to take pictures on a broad spectrum-love nature, kids, beautiful scenery and some abstract creations.

This photo was taken with my Cannon 70d.-hand held. I used my photo enhancing software to tweek the final entry.

Yes ,most of the time. I use Apple post processing, and photo matrix, and photoshop and light room.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
UHH is the winner here, hands down. I've really enjoyed the great people here-kind critique ,and encouragement! I love to take part in any Hot Air balloon shows that I can...The colors and excitement always pull me there!

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My husband!

An interview with Blurryeyed,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been active with my camera for about 7 years now. What got me started I think was an appreciation for photography ever since I was a kid, I think that we all or at least most of us recall using our parents cameras during our High School days. I guess there just came a time that I was looking for some artistic expression and a camera was by far my best choice.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have no formal training in photography, I have learned a lot by reading from different sources, books, the Hog, and other internet resources. I for years shot a lot of macro and became fairly good at it. Of late I have been wanting to do other types of photography, birds, people, landscape, and have always had an interest in street photography.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
I think that interesting pictures come in many different forms, I think that my photo of the Eagle was interesting not because of anything that I did, but that the pic just happened to catch the Eagle in an interesting pose which created interest and gave the picture attitude. I see beauty in well composed and well exposed landscapes, I see great drama and interest in black and whites, especially of people. I would say that any photograph that conveys interest and feeling or just makes the beauty of its subject stand out is a great photograph.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I did not use any special equipment in this photograph, I am using a Canon 7D Mark II for birding and the new 100-400 lens so that was a pretty large investment but nothing in the way of lighting or anything like that. As far as technique? I picked up some great tips from fellow Hoggers telling me that I want my shutter speed as fast as I can get it without pushing my ISO to the point that the images are too grainy. My go to settings for birding is ISO 800 with the camera set on AV with an aperture of 7.1 to 8.0. I will adjust EV + or - for either light backgrounds (sky) or dark backgrounds, (vegetation) depending on the coloration of the bird.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Well, I am not very organized but I do shoot RAW and process with Photoshop CC. I have found the RAW editor embedded in Photoshop to be wonderful and very easy to use. The reason that I shoot RAW has been discussed on the forum many times but I can say that it gives so much more control over tonal qualities and exposure than jpeg images do.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Members here on the form, Martin Fisher in particular does wonderful work in both macro and birding. He and I will talk from time to time and he really helped me get started with the birds.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
No, I am pretty new to birding, just about a month now of making a serious effort. I am just having fun and am very thankful that I had the good fortune to be lucky enough to get that shot.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
LOL.. Maybe how much money I would end up spending, maybe I would have never bought the first digital.... But really I am enjoying my addiction, better than some other things that I could be spending that time and money on.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
If I could only have one lens and no other maybe something in the 24-70 f/2.8 or a 24-105 on a full frame...

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?

An interview with recalcitrant1,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I first became interested in photography when I took an "intro to photography" course my senior year in college....way back in 1975. I started with a Nikormat SLR and have been an SLR fan/user ever since. With the development of digital, and more time for travel/exploring hobbies and interest I've found a new appreciation/interest in the subject.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Only "formal training" was the aforementioned intro class I took in college. Since then I've been self taught/self study with various books and on-line forums (including UHH)

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Subject matter and composition. Very subjective "feel" to me in terms of what captures my attention and interest.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Canon 60D with 18 - 135 f3.5 - 5.6 "kit" lens. Handheld and no pp.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I seldom do post processing and the few times I have used it, its been primarily for sharpening, white balance and saturation adjustment.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Viewing the various posting and comments in the daily UHH and weekly DPS feeds I receive. The inspiration for this shot was simply a winter vacation in the Bahamas and escape from Chicago winters. The tranquility of the location (sun sand and turquois waters) captured the essence of a relaxing environment.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I had to shoot at somewhat odd angles in order to minimize some beach umbrellas that were in the lower part of the shot and on a private beach. If I had removed these I would have had a bit more flexibility to enhance the framing.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Better understanding/utilization of light

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
By books and links

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I love my Canon 18-135 lens as it provides great versatility as an "all around" lens.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I mainly do out-door shots using natural light and simply use on-camera flash when necessary.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I have more hobbies/interests than time to explore them all. These include but are not limited to target shooting and general shooting sports, beer brewing, "road trip" travels, storm spotting (and chasing), bicycling and other out-doors activities.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
One of my favorite photo road trips was taking Rt. 66 from Chicago to LA in 2010. It provided myriad opportunities for landscape, historic building, post industrial building, signage and other photo ops. It was like taking an extended trip back in time.... kind of a living museum that in many cases have deteriorating/decaying "exhibits"

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Nope, I should but don't have any kind of shared or "cloud storage" portfolio up. Maybe my next project as it is fun to share with others.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I've learned far more from the rest of you than I could ever provide.

An interview with ciclista,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I got my first SLR (a Contaflex Super B) when I was a college student working and traveling in Germany for the summer in 1958. Equipment was simpler then!!

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. I like to photograph wildlife, and anything with interesting shapes and shadows.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Interesting shapes, shadows, patterns, details that we ordinarily overlook.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used my Canon 70D, 18-135 mm lens. I set the candle and document on one tripod against a black curtain, and the camera on another tripod. The candle flame was overexposed, but didn't find that the in-camera HDR helped.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Sometimes I use PhotoShop or LightRoom to adjust the brightness and contrast, but didn't have time to adjust this shot. I often have to adjust the brightness or contrast to print with alternative photographic methods, reducing the contrast for cyanotypes and increasing it for salt prints.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Ansel Adams of course!!! This shot was inspired by the fact that the weather was bad so I wanted to stay in the cellar.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I'd probably try to post-process the image to make the document brighter and the candle not so washed out.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I didn't understand how much time and work goes into a single image, both the time needed to get the right image in the camera and the post-processing. Fortunately, when I have the time, it's fun and rewarding!

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My Canon Pro-100 printer.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
My 18-135-mm zoom lens, with its wide range, is my most useful lens. I use the 55-250 mm telephoto to photograph animals, focusing in on their faces and eyes.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
None.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Bicycling! Thus the ID cyclista (Italian for cyclist).

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
A few years ago my wife and I were in Sao Paulo and I got pick-pocketed , but not hurt (second time that day!) in an outdoor mall. The people who saw it pointed in the direction the pick-pocket ran, and with their pointing I tracked him down to a nearby cafe. To at least get a souvenir, I took his picture. When I went outside, the people pointed to some nearby police, so I went to them and showed them my photo on the LCD screen of my camera. Without a word, they knew what had happened and chased after him. I followed, and the next photo I took was the pick-pocket spread-eagled against a wall. I posted the photo and the story on our travel web page that evening!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
No. Maybe I should think about that.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Stay active!
