Went to the Mardi Gras

I have been following Lindas' thread about shooting with the intent of converting to B&W and realized that I hadn't done that in a while so I decided to head to downtown Baton Rouge for some B&W shots. Now, you may know that Mardi Gras is a big thing here in south Louisiana, but I really wasn't thinking about it at the time and when I got downtown I realized that a parade had ran this morning. As it happened, I got there after the crowds left and before the clean up. What follows shows the carnage left behind. I think it made for some striking B&W images.

Wowsa, Erik, do these tell a story, or what?! I don't think I've ever seen this side of Mardi Gras. Love these shots!

Re the b&w thread: that was a collaboration with MinnieV, Dave Chinn and others. I'm delighted you were inspired, and also extremely grateful for the terrific participation - so we can all continue to learn and enjoy.

On #3, maybe consider cropping down to the light poles? That would help take us into the gutter :)

I like the lopsided angle of #1 - seems appropriate to how one would feel after the festivities, and it emphasizes the chaos.

Linda,
Thanks so much. I'm really glad that I went with the intention of shooting B&W, otherwise I may not have thought of it at the time and I think it really does help tell the story. When you think of Mardi Gras, it's usually the gaudy costumes and bright colors that come to mind first. Seeing the aftermath in stark B&W is a great departure from the norm I think.
And you're right, I like the crop better, Thanks again!

Super!

I'm going to pretty much stick with b&w for the next few weeks, at least 'til the orchards start blossoming :) It's definitely easier to keep the brain in one mode or the other - at least for me.

Nice "carnage" images! I have some shots of similar scenes in New Orleans, but I don't think I ever tried converting more than one to black and white, I guess because Mardi Gras is so gaudy. I can see some other possibilities I could try. The "day after" may better be shown in monochrome!

Hi, aerie,
In that these images reflect directly some less-than-admirable aspects of the behaviors of Homo sapiens, they actually fall, within the realm of traditional street photography!

Thank you. There are probably millions of images of carnival out there but rarely do you see shots taken after the festivities. I got lucky that day because I had gone there with the intent of shooting B&W and had no idea that they had just had a parade. I shoot raw and had the my preview monitor set to monochrome so when I imported them into LR, I got the color versions, and to me, none of the shots worked in color. They fairly screamed for B&W.

Dave,
Carnival is definitely the busiest time of the year for city sanitation workers. As I mentioned, the success of Mardi Gras here is measured in tons of garbage collected. Street photography is a bit of a new avenue for me, but I'm really enjoying it.
