Need help with 18-55mm lens usage

These are the best photos I got with my canon rebel using the 18-55mm lens. When I tried go higher (with the 55 mm telephoto) I couldn't get it to focus, even when I moved about a foot away. What am I doing wrong?
First photo is 800,24mm, f/5.6, 1/160
second photo is ISO 400,55mm f/13,1/200

Any help would be very welcome. I tried with and without a tripod, monopod - still couldn't get what I wanted.

You are trying to close focus with a lens not designed to do so.

You could set the dial on close up which is the Tulip looking figure on your dial and possibly get a little bit more focus on your subject..

Try leaning back just a little bit .. a ft should be far enough away for the lens to focus.

The minimum focal distance on the 55-250 is 3.6ft

Same as above - back off and zoom in, if this is your only choice, only lens.

I also shoot with this lens and only thing I have figured out is there is not enough contrast in the image for the focus beam or the beam is bouncing off more than one point and confusing the camera. You can always switch to manual and see if that works.

Yeah, but my lens is 18-55mm - minimum on lens says 0.8ft!

get a macro lens....or an adapter to mount that lens backwards and shoot in manual.

Try using the macro setting, I have a T3 with the same lens and Macro will allow you to get closer.

I use a screw on close up adapter for this type of picture.
I also have 18-55

A Macro lens best bet for doing close ups and getting sharp clean images.

I don't know what camera you have but I have a
T2i canon and if I set it to the closeup setting I can focus as close as 4-6" with the 35-55 kit lens

Hi drjc, That distance is when the lens is at the minimal setting of 18mm. Once you start cranking up the zoom you need to move away from the subject. :)

This might be a review of that lens
