I hope you all get a kick out of this.
First, the setup: My wife and I were not expecting to have any children over on Sunday (we are getting old). Around 11 in the morning, my wife gets a phone call. It was our 5 year old grandson crying his heart out. Evidently, he got a sliver from a wooden railing while with the other grandmother. She could not help him. Oh, no. He had to have his GG (my wife) look at it.
So, they came over and I think he was more scared than hurt. He would not even let my wife touch his hand, but she was a comfort nonetheless.
Now for grandpa to the rescue. I sat down with him (I could not touch his hand either) and said, "Well, Benny, you are 5 now, right?". He shook his head yes. I then said, You are old enough to learn what my daddy showed me when I was 5." I have no clue if my dad showed me this when I was 5.
Anyway, I went down to my train table and got my jewelers goggles and my wife got a straight pin. I then explained to him what I wanted him to do. It was so cute what transpired next. Brave little boy. I will now let the pictures tell the story.
Trying to adjust to the magnification.

Brother Josh, giving him a toy hoping that this will make Ben feel better.

Grandpa adding a little extra light on the subject while GG is at the ready. Download to see the size of that sliver.

Almost done! He took it as far as he wanted to. Now it was off to see Kum Fu Panda 3 at the theater.

Well, it was a bit sizable. At least the surgery went well and he's on the mend. Nice job and congrats to all involved.

Us Grandads are come in very useful at times like this Tom. You came up with a very novel way to deal with this situation, your Grandson will be happy he got to deal with it in his way, while you and your good wife will feel happy the little lad has got the sliver (spelk) out....now where did I put those welding goggles!
Give a man a fish and he will eat, teach a man to fish.........
