I have added a second battery to my D7100, does the camera automatically drain both batteries or must I select this option somewhere. Thanks in advance

The camera will automatically drain one then the other, YOU can select which one to use first....

In the menu settings...custom settings, under shooting / display under d13, set battery order. I set mine to use the grip battery first since that is the easiest to pull to recharge.... most of the time I recharge the grip battery and the internal still have plenty of life left...

Thanks. I'm trying an Interval timing setup and it appears when the first battery is drained the camera doesn't automatically go to the second battery. When I charge the grip battery it takes just a few minutes to full charge vs normal approx 25 min. I'll try the setup that uses the grip battery first. Thanks again for your comments.

Do you have a Nikon grip or another brand? The non-Nikon brands might have electrical connection issues that could cause flakiness.

I have mine set to drain the grips battery first, easier to get at for recharging. , but I do swap out battery locations about once a month. don't know if it's needed or not but I look at it as giving um both exercise. Probably not necessary.

Good idea. I don't get much exercise, and I feel as if my batteries are running down. :D

That doesn't sound right. Do you have other batteries to try? Are they Nikon batteries? How old?

Everyone provided great advice. The only suggestion I can make is to use official Nikon batteries. I tried mixing a 3rd party and a nikon in my grip setup and the batteries did not last that long. Switched to two Nikon batteries and now they seem to last forever.

FWIW - I have a Nikon battery and a Wasabi battery, one in the camera, one in the grip - both have worked reliably with no problems. I use the Nikon charger for both batteries.

Mostly I end up charging the grip battery as it gets used most on shoots, when it comes time to charge the internal battery I swap them.

FYI: What I have learned so far is when you start a interval timing project that may take days to complete start with an AC adapter. It is near impossible to get the camera back in the same position after battery swap. I don't know what will happen to the ET video when the transition to different camera physical location is encountered, maybe minimal but I will get an AC adapter and not have to attend the camera. This battery swap is a pain and has to have a negative effect to the ET video.
You, no doubt, have encountered this situation---but just in case
it can be of some help. Thanks again for your comments.
