Probably Never Go Back To........

I really have no desire to ever return to Argentia, Newfoundland; due to some sort of mineral deficiency in the drinking water supply, all of the "Newfies" teeth fall out by the time they reach 25 to 35 years old.

99% of the women weren't terribly attractive even with their mouth closed, and when it was open it was much worse!

Also.....there isn't a whole hellava lot to do in Argentia; there were vast numbers of flounders on the bottom of the harbor, and inasmuch as I was a shipfitter and we had a very well equipped shipfitter's shop, we quickly constructed a number of flounder "traps", lowered them over the rail of the ship to the bottom, allowed them to lay on the bottom for an hour or so, and when we pulled them back up after an hour or two, about 4 times out of 10 the thing would have a nice big flounder laying on it!

We had a forge that was used in metal fabrication that made a dandy oven to bake the flounders in. IMO, flounder is one of my all time favorite salt water fish to eat; we ate a lot of them in the 4 or 5 days we were in port at Argentia, and just catching them was our main form of entertainment while we were in Newfoundland. (It's a rather dull place and not much to look at. )

It was a 90 mile bus ride to St. Johns, the only city in Newfoundland that's any size, but the roads were all gravel and it took the bus almost 4 hours one way, so we only went to St. Johns one time, which was more than sufficient; We did see maybe a dozen Moose on the way to St. John's and back; Moose aren't all that much to look at either, but when it's the first time you have ever seen one in the wild, they're kinda interesting. Moose are not the least bit friendly, but at least they're usually not "unfriendly either; They're not the least bit afraid of people, so when you drive past one, they pretty much just don't pay any attention to you. (I seriously doubt that I'll ever be going back to St. Johns either.)

We went ashore one time in Greenland, (which doesn't have a bit of "green" BTW), but the dinky little "no name" village didn't even have a harbor to speak of, so we had to go ashore 40 at a time in a 40 ft. open motor launch, while the ship anchored out a few hundred yards from shore. I don't even recall what we did when we got ashore, but I do know that it "wasn't much".......so I'm about 99.9997% sure that I also won't be returning to Greenland any time soon either.
