I am new to the digital photography world. Do I need Photoshop CS, or Lightroom?
I don't want to purchase CS if I don't need to.

Just depends on how interested you are in processing. There are free editors for basic edits, and there are programs you can download or purchase on CD, such as Photoshop Elements, that do a whole lot - including being able to edit raw files.

Many previous topics on this subject, and everyone will have different suggestions :)

Maybe talk a little more about what your goals are, how computer literate you are, and how much time you want to spend in the digital darkroom.

You can start with lr, but you will eventually need ps also. Get the $9.99/mo subscription and have both.

Check out Light Zone. It's a free application. The only thing they request is you register, which is simply providing an email address. Actually, I never hear from them.

It will allow you to do some pretty advanced editing. It also comes with a free learning curve.

Nobody can tell you what you need, only you know that. If you want the industry standard for cataloging and editing then you should look at the Adobe CC subscription. For $9.99 a month you get both Lightroom and Photoshop. LR for cataloging and basic editing. PS for pixel pushing

There is a lot you can do in Lightroom with digital media. Unless you want to get into heavy editing and manipulation with layers, etc, you will not need to go with Photoshop. IMHO, while the LR learning curve is steep, Photoshop's is a mountain by comparison.

I do not want to get into heavy editing. Just want to clean up and crop, and print some black & white prints.
Thanks for the help.

Although I would recommend the CC2015 plan at 9.99 a month, you might download "Picasa" which is easy to use and also is free, it might do all that you want to do. If not satisfied with it then look into the CC2015 plan.
Lightroom and Photoshop are fast becoming the most popular photo editing programs, you would be ahead of the game by using at least Lightroom which will probably do all that you are needing for now.

You don't need either particularly just starting out. Use the software that came with the camera or some others that are free.

Once you learn something about it you'll be able to answer your own question.

I would guess that, at the beginning of your PP experience, you cannot realistically anticipate where your journey may lead.

You are new to UHH so have not had time to appreciate all the fine work posted here. You may reach a point where you may say "I want to learn how to do that"...or you may not.

Did your camera include processing software? If so, start there (and quickly realize the limitations.) Or start with freeware (and quickly realize the limitations.)

About five years ago, I was using a simple Canon P&S and the Canon-provided software. But I decided I wanted better results, and jumped to CS5...and a D7000. Now I'm into luminosity masking in conjunction with CS6 (almost time to jump to CC.) I know I will never master more than 10% of the power of CS.

You may be starting a long journey.

Lightroom is a mere foothill by comparison.

I would buy Photoshop Elements. New $99, recent version $69. I had the full version for years, but I found Elements does anything a new photo process person can do. David

I agree with that recommendation. It's amazing the CS features that are now standard in Elements 14.
