I am seeing a spot on the images produced by my Canon ELPH 100 HS. I have a number of bigger and better DLSR and Power shot camera but this one has been living in my pocket or briefcase since 2010. It is always there so I use it a lot. Recently I was on a hunting drip. Took a photo of my buddy in front of an active Oil Rig in the early morning light. I noticed this spot.

I cannot see any spot on the lens system. The spot is always in the same location and varies in size and intensity with the zoom level.

I will have to fix this or get another camera. Fix it means fixing it myself.

I have two photos. One at 5mm zoom. The other at 20 mm or full optical zoom. Look at the photos.

What do you think. Dirt/Mold on one if the lens elements?

Anyone have experience disassembling one of these cameras?

The dark spot is at full zoom.

No spot evident at 5mm. There are any number of comparable cameras out there, many with updated features since the Canon Elph 100HS was inrtroduced. Buying one would be much simpler than trying to "repair" a camera that has stopped functioning. Nothing lasts forever.

The spot is there at 5mm. Larger diameter and very faint.

It costs nothing to try to repair it. Surely someone at the hedgehog works on their own equipment.

My walk about lens for me DLSR was purchased broken from a local camera shop and repaired by me.

I am just hoping someone has had one of these Elph's apart.

If I break it worse than it is nothing lost. It owes me nothing. I am still using a Power-shot camera purchased in 2001 or 2002. Works fine. Just a little slow to focus.

Classic dust spot on the sensor
Of course - that could be a problem since you can't simply remove the lens on your Elph to get to the sensor !!

It changes size when you zoom. I would think it would be the same size if it was on the sensor. No digital zoom being used here.

This is just a dust or pollen spot on your sensor and can be easily removed.

Definitely dust on the sensor, the size and shape change from aperture variation not zoom. No way to remove it if shaking the camera does not do so.

I don't know if I'm seeing just that dark spot or also a lot of other stray material. If you can deal with the spot in post - assuming it's noticeable - that's a simple fix. Otherwise, there are many new Elph models that will outperform what you have.

I'm betting something on the sensor. This could be dust.

Had a spot like that appear on my G7, now I have a G15, cost to clean was more than the cost to replace, KEH bought the G7 from me.

Just a thought. Get a good drill and drill out the spot. Lift out the dust and refill the glass with clear epoxy! Glad I could help! :-)
