My coins...

Inspired by the coin stack posted earlier by randave2001, I went back to some I took last week. I was temporarily out of fossil/minerals to practice on, so I was wandering the house looking for something to focus stack.

I took a bunch of some of my wristwatches, but we will keep them for another day.

This is the British 2 Pound coin. I just happened to have it in my pocket after my last visit home, and it has not been cleaned or anything. This coin is made from 2 different metals. My stacked images with flash don't show up the difference in the metals at all well, so I did a couple of stacks in natural light. Most of the stacks are around a dozen separate images.

I have upgraded quite a bit of gear recently, so I may revisit some of these later. I have one of those folding light-tents, which may help to get the flash exposures a bit more natural. Stacking by natural light takes quite a bit more time...

Let's see if I can label these to make sense...

I like the flash stacks the best.

Must not be able to carry too many of those coins that weigh two pounds each. ;)

The flash stacks are better images, but they don't show the two-tone of the coins at all.

The coins aren't quite that heavy, but they do weigh quite a bit. Used to be, you could carry your money in a wallet. Then, they phased out the 10s note for a 50p coin, when decimalization came in, back in 72 or 73 I think. Then, the pound note was phased out in favour of a fairly-hefty coin. They brought in this 2 pound coin, but it wasn't very popular at the time, so it may have been pulled. Last I heard, they even phased out the 5 pound note in favour of a coin. You can be carrying quite a lot of money in your 'spare change' pocket!

That would be like replacing all the notes up to $10 with coins... I know the coins last much longer, but they aren't exactly convenient!

I'm reminded of learning lighting from Dean Collins.

Photographing glass and metal and other highly polished surfaces involves artful blending of specular and diffused light sources. The sizes of the light sources, relative to the size of the subject, are what controls the character of the highlights and shadows on three-dimensional surfaces.

I'd probably light this coin on two sides with a tent, and back light it with a harder source. The result would be much like the first image you shot in available light.

Working with *photo grade* CFL or LED lights would help you pre-visualize the scene. You can move the lights around, vary the intensity, etc. before exposing. It cuts the number of trials way down.
