Never have done this before. Just trying it out... I'm a newbie. Just bought a Nikon 31000 last night. Doing my best to learn all about it. Quite intimidating...

Welcome to UHH.
Don't be intimidated, have fun. The more you use your camera, the more comfortable you'll become with it and the more those things you have to think about will become second nature. If you go to YouTube and type in "D3100" you will find many fine tutorials. There are many excellent books available, some are camera specific that go into more detail than the owner's manual and some are on general photography. One really worth getting is "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. There are a lot of very knowledgable here, who will be happy to help and reading the answers to other people's questions can be very enlightening.
So grab your camera, go out and shoot, shoot, shoot.
Looking forward to seeing your photos in the photo gallery.

Hello Maggie from Maine. Don't let that camera intimidate you! Subdue it! 8-)
Welcome to the forum. Don't be intimidated - just jump right in. People here will help you along the way.
Not sure how to do that...

Best way - post a picture and ask for advice on how to make it better. You can post it now by hitting "reply" to this msg and loading a file from the compose screen. People in the "intro forum" are pretty nice and encouraging. If you go over to the photo analysis forum, you might get some more blunt replies. You just have to know that the feedback, although maybe sounding condescending or brusk, will usually have a good amount of info in it. You just have to take the info and ignore any perceived negative connotations.
You can also go over to the photo analysis section and just read a bunch of threads. I do that frequently and come away with a lot of new info I didn't even know I was looking for :)
That's what I mean by "just jump in"
