I have a Konika Minolta Dimage 20 z 20, I just listed on E bay , It was a good starter for me , It has all the features of a good dslr , manual , P,Av,S, 5 auto modes , plus a small lcd display and it has video mode also for 35 bucks with case and sd card 2 gig , it is a great started . and if she looses or breaks it , well no big loss.

Just one question: is there a problem which prohibits you from doing research on the net? I think asking the name of a camera is fair enough. However, you're a big boy and can reseach the cameras suggested to you. It will help her out and clearly you, too.

Grandpa got his 10 year old grandaughter a Nikon S4100 point and shoot for her B-Day. She screamed when she opened the present and just loves the camera.
I got my grand daughter a phone with an eight mg pixel camera. She takes great photos and calls me and tells me about them. She wanted a "regular" camera but she told me this one was better because it had a phone with it. She was thirteen. This came up a couple of weeks ago here on the forum, so I called her and asked her if she still wanted a "regular" camera. Maybe later but not now, she told me.
Any of the current point 'n shoots from any of the top brands would be fine I'm sure for what 11 year old kids typically like to photograph.
Don't stress and over research and over analyize it to death. Just go buy something and let her have fun with it.
There are a lot of starter cameras on the market. Depends on how much you wish to spend grandpa. I would suggest you google "starter cameras" and do your research there. You will be surprised what you will learn...Good Luck

Hey, this is a great site! I need a good macro lens for my canon. PM on it's way with my mailing address.
If she realy wants to know about photograpy I would go with a film SLR from Ebay. I would look for a Minolta in the SRT series or Pentax Spotomatic or other brand with match neddle metering. You can get an outfit even with one or two extra lenses for $35. A lot less than a point and shoot. I have done the Photography Merit Badge for the Bopy Scouts for maney years and we have a Merit Badge Fair each year that about 20 boys sign up for and every year I get one or two boys that do just that and become fery knowlegable about photography. How to use differant settings to get differant outcomes. They are 11 &12 years olds. If boys can do it so can girls. - Dave
Do you think a M9 would be asking too much ..
Seriously, that was a super touch....
My very bright 11 year old grand daughter got my old but in great shape Canon AE1. The joy she and I are experiencing is worth all the expensive 35MM film and developing costs! She is taking great pictures and composing them with light, f-stop, shutter speed and ISO being learned the way we all did! I am so glad that I can spend that kind of time and bond with her even more than ever. She is able to pick up my new Canon D60 and use it like a pro because she learned the "old" way where everything needed to be cost conscious and composed...not throw away if it didn't happen to be what she wanted. Film can still be cheap on E-Bay and it is fun to watch her anxiously wait for the prints. Try it and you will build memories that cannot be erased!
These are from the last outing and at the Kansa City, Mo zoo after they got me and themselves exhausted! The camera is the Canon AE1.
