Penny For Your Thoughts...
A Penny for Your Thoughts!I just bought an old B&W darkroom photo enlarger from a local Good Will and removed the enlarger head and mounted my DSLR to use it as a copy stand. I did it without any fuss and took a quick snap of a US penny...
I didn't set up any lighting or use a flash... I just wanted to get a quick idea how the stand would work. I just used the available room light which wasn't balanced, to see what type of results I would get.
Below is the snapshot of a US penny that I took using the enlarger stand.... Later I'll get serious and use an electronic level on the camera, and balanced the lighting when I take my next photo using the photo enlarger stand.
P.S. I paid $10 for the enlarger after using my $5 discount coupon!
I'd say you ran into a little gem of a piece of equipment. I can see that would be a nice addition for macro photography. Job well done and what a great photo!
Ingenious, great find and a wonderful idea. Way-to-Go Bruce!
My thought is you have acquired for yourself a very nice tool.
I wouldn't mind having one for myself.
Quit clever indeed. Thank you for sharing this.

Thanks Ted... much appreciated... every now and then I come up with a hairbrain, inexpensive, improvised idea that has merit... the last semi-creative idea that I had was when I laid my silver tarp on the ground around my Dogwood tree... I used the tarp for a huge reflector to send some needed light up into the heavy shaded tree interior so I could have better lighting to photograph the birds hiding in the heavy interior shaded tree limbs... it worked pretty good... :)

Thanks Jim... much appreciated...
Improvisation can solve problems and help save money at the same time... I always have fun browsing at the local Goodwill stores even if I don't buy anything, and most of the time I don't.
On occasion I can find a good buy on camera related items or other items that can be adapted or used for photography in a different way other than the item's original intended use.
Topic moved from "Photo Gallery" to "Main Photography Discussion"...

Excellent. Did it come with an enlarger lens? If so, these can be mounted on bellows or extension tubes and used for macro. Since they are flat field in design they work with reasonable edge-to-edge sharpness

Thanks for commenting... much appreciated... start hitting the Goodwill stores... I have often seen them but until now I haven't purchased one... this one looked very clean and it has a nice 50mm f/3.5 lens, and the price was right... another UHH member (LoneRangeFinderr/Allen) said the lens can be used with your camera with good results... I'll try that later for fun when I have the time...

Yes. You'll need an adapter. If you have access to machinist tools, you could drill a body cap and use it on extension tubes. I'd be careful mounting it directly on your DSLR, because the back of the lens threaded into a body cap might interfere with internal mechanism on the body. Another option is to attach it to the front (again adapter needed) of another lens. Check Ebay for adapters. What brand is the lens? I used to have a 50/f3.5 & still have a 75mm/f3.5 which is for medium format. The 50 was the standard for 35mm enlargers.
What a great idea. Much luck with it. Penny looks great.
