Fogo Island, Newfoundland

One of our favorite stops in Newfoundland last summer was Fogo Island. We took our motorhome, car and four people on a 1-2 hour ferry and camped at the base of Brimstone Head in the town of Fogo. Brimstone Head is one of the four corners of the earth if you happen to belong to the Flat Earth Society! We climbed it in a Nor'easter and it was awesome! The shorelines were breathtaking. The bogs were just full of life. Once again, the people were awesome. We were invited by a local to go cod fishing so we took him up on it and caught some nice cod. On the way back in, we saw a beached rare Sowerby's Beaked Whale that was still alive but he didn't make it. Togo Island even has its own resident billionaire who has built a hotel for the people of Fogo near Tilting. Quite a place in spite of the weather! Here are a few shots. The Pitcher Plant shown is a carnivorous plant that loves it here in poor soil. It doesn't need good soil because it digests bugs and even small animals which get trapped in the tubular leaves at the base. We saw a small frog in one waiting its demise! A little sad but that's nature!

I like all three shots! I find the dark line bordering the edges of the flower or leaf in the third photo to be quite odd. Is it an anomaly or is that how the flower was? Upon a closer look it appears to be the edges of the thing turned toward the camera. At any rate a very nice shot!

I guess I don't see the lines you are talking about unless you are talking about the vines in the leaves or flower which are natural for the plant.

I was talking about the fine dark line at the perimeter of the flower on the long stalk, in the middle of the photo. It's very fine but stands out, for me anyway. It adds definition and interest to it.

I enjoyed these!
The pitcher plant is most unusual.

I love Newfoundland! I was stationed there at Ernest Harmon AFB - Stephenville Crossing - from March of 1964 to September of 1965. A wildly beauutiful place of our world I wish everyone could see just once. "You can't see the forest for the trees applies to many areas of the Province." (Literally)

Very interesting and appealing series. I wouldn't have thought to put the red building right at edge of frame in #1 like that, but I really like it that way!

I have a Canon 5D MII with a Canon 100/400 lens and Canon SX50. I haven't had the 5D too long so it is a single lens camera for the time being.

The pitcher plant is a Sarracenia Purpurea and there are sundews between it and the rock. They are Drosera Rotundafolia and also "eat" bugs. They grow in the north east and I'm surprised to see them both so far north.

Great pictures and story.

I didn't even see the sundews until you pointed them out. We. Saw pitcher plants everywhere in Newfoundland and lots of them. There is an area in Gros Morne called Tablelands where rock from the earth's mantel is exposed. It is a beautiful and interesting place but does not provide good soil for growing most plants. Pitcher plants are all over these rocks. We did not see that many sundews but we did see some. We also saw some beautiful orchids growing up there and Newfoundland has to be one of the great berry picking areas of the world. Bake Apple, Partridge or Lingonberry, crowberry, you name it I think they have it mostly growing very low to the ground.
