I can not figure out how to get my Nikon D800E to autofocus on
a moving subject.
Like birds and planes when using a Telephoto Zoom.

Try this link to a Tony Northrup video on Back Button Focus. I use this all the time with my Nikons. You probably want to use Single Point autofocus or a small grid like 9 or 11 focus points. You're manual will explain this. Good luck!

Does your camera focus on stationary subjects? If not, then you need to check the entire autofocus system. Is the Autofocus/Manual switch on the lens set to AF? Clean the lens to body contacts with some alcohol wipes.

If it does focus then it is most likely a settings issue. Your camera must be set to what Nikon calls AF-C (continuous) or Canon calls AI-Servo. Use all the AF points to start and see if it will track a slowly moving subject.

Let us know how you make out!
