I can not figure out how to get my Nikon D800E to autofocus on
a moving subject.
Like birds and planes when using a Telephoto Zoom.

AF-C and 3D Matrix metering works for me.

Do you find that 3D works equally well for subjects moving in lateral as well as perpendicular planes?

Does AF-C continuous only work in Live View???
I'm old-school with the Viewfinder.

AF-C works with the viewfinder on my Df.

I never use live view, that's why all my cameras have optical viewfinders.

Thank you to Bob, MT Shooter and Mac.
I'll give this a good go tomorrow with some birds in the yard.

Use AF-C. It will continually AF with both methods. My Nikons stay in AF-C all the time--I never change from it. :-)

Same here. It's the only way I shoot. :-)

I use AF-c, fast continue mode, 3-D Tracking plus Back button focusing.

It hasn't been mentioned but I find using 9 point focus works better for BIF.

You got the point! 3-D tracking is good for the BIF if the back ground is simple and clear of other distracting object. If the bird is flying on top of something like trees, I will use the 9 point dynamic area, it will give the camera less confusing to focusing.

Focus is more of a factor with subjects moving towards or away from the camera, not so much left to right or right to left. Panning is more an issue in the latter to help reduce motion blur. So much to know, so little time.
