In a country that does not exactly belong to the First World, Morocco is prohibiting the manufacture and used of plastic bags. Just carrying one carries a fine of up to $10,000! Isn't it about time that the First World caught up?

So few people seem to realise the contamination they cause. It is calculated that in the Mediterranean alone there are 500,000 tons of plastic some of which is ingested by fish and then naturally, eaten by humans.

Plastic is invasive to our safe health and to our food in which we eat.....

I think I read some place that San Francisco has banned plastic bags. It's a good start but will take several years before other areas decide to follow.

OR...it could be that the whole "plastic is evil" thing is just bunk and we aren't drinking the Environmentalist Kool-aid as generously as some folks would like.

You seem to be living in a world all of your own. Plastic micro pellets are used in many products, toothpaste and exfoliating cream for instance. They get washed down the drain and eventually ends up in the sea where it is ingested by fish and thus passed down the food chain not only to humans but to other wildlife too.

Those plastic "rings" that hold six packs together are responsible for the deaths of many aquatic birds that get tangled up in them.

Simply making people pay a small amount for a plastic bag has worked very well here in UK. The number of bags given out by supermakets has plummeted since the charge was introduced.

Those of us over a certain age will have remembered when we were young and plastic bags were unheard of. We all carried our own bags when we went shopping, I don't remember it as any hardship.

Some supermarkets in recent years have had biodegradable bags but others never bothered. The worst supermarket has to be Sainsburys with their deep orange bags which show up like beacons from trees and bushes where the wind has blown them.

But they are strong and re-usable and because of the colour, easy to find.

Their big, reusable bags are good (and better coloured) but my reference was to their basic bags which are not strong and it is 'because of the colour, easy to find' which make them such an eyesore when they are discarded and blown all over the place!

I've had mine for years and they've never blown away and when they are no longer usable I will dispose of them responsibly.
