While visiting the cemetery to place flowers we spotted 4 Nene goose walking and enjoying the wonderful sunshine. One of the Nene's evidently had broken its left leg earlier in life (photo 1 front goose) and it had been taken care of. It was very unusual to see them at this low of an elevation as they are normally seen on the slopes of Haleakala Crater. Also the cemetery was full of people. Was very happy to have had my camera with me to capture this wonderful event.
Wow! Great captures! (I always get excited to see birds where they don't belong) Must have been 'visiting' relatives for the holidays.
Mahalo for taking the time to look. The Nene is Hawaii's state bird and are known to prefer to stay on the ground rather than fly. These birds removed by the Humane Society and placed up on Haleakala Crater in an area where the Nene's are known. They have all been previously tagged and their home locations are known. Again, mahalo for taking the time.
