The first thing I would suggest is getting a good book on your camera. David Busch writes books on just about every camera out there and it is one of the first things I purchase because the camera manuals will tell you how to set your camera up but these kind of books will tell you how and why you should set it up this way. Here's the link from Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/David-Buschs-Nikon-Digital-Photography/dp/168198038XOther than that, digital cameras work pretty much the same as film cameras, you still have controls for the aperture and shutter speed so the same rules apply. But, unlike the days of film, you are not limited by ISO speed, film type (color vs black and white) and number of frames per roll. It took me a while to get use to all of this
Another great aspect of the digital world is post-processing. Programs like Photoshop and Corel Draw are great for making corrections on pictures. Rather than spending all your time trying to read books on how to run these programs (tried that, it didn't work) I would suggest websites like Lynda.com. Lynda.com has on-line videos for just about every computer program out there. The videos are short, mostly no more than five to ten minutes, and they take you from the very basics to highly advanced operations. The last time I looked, the cost was about $25 a month for unlimited use.
Good luck and have fun!
Welcome. My best advice is buy a book on the D5500, read the book while your playing with the camera. The book will tell you a lot more about the camera than your owners manual will.
Welcome, what they said, I shoot Canon
Good luck. I started with a D5200 and learned a lot about DSLR photography here at the Hog and from Tony Northrup's Kindle book, Stunning Digital Photography. It's the best $10 you'll ever spend, I still use it as a field reference on my smartphone. Also, Scott Kelby and Bryan Peterson are wonderful authors and always get recommended around here. Welcome aboard...
