I'm going to visit Howe Caverns tomorrow. I haven't been there in years, so I thought it's time for a return trip. Basically, it's a large cave system with colored lights here and there. I'm thinking wide angle zoom with the SB600 flash. I realize the flash will wipe out those colored lights.
I'm willing to hear any suggestions about lenses and lighting. I have a 12-24, and some Nikon 18mm-and-up zooms. I plan to bring a monopod, too. I'd rather not bring two cameras, as it can be a bit tight down there.
Sounds like you have some pretty good ideas. Having never been there I have no idea of how bright the lights are. You may get away with cranking your ISO up to 1600 {maybe higner} and bracing your monopod against something to make it as steady as possible, and using the fastest lens you have. You may want to least try some without any additional lighting - you may be surprised. Okay, maybe not - but you won't be out of much
It's not very bright down there. I guess they want you to remember that you're way underground. That's a good idea about the ISO.

Do they allow flash? Some place don't.
Mike
i take it they allow the monopod also i new you could use flash. been along time since i was there
This was from a small local cave quite crowded conditions - hand held (is set at max) some lighting so I shot bracketing - this was a spur of the moment trip but I am going back when it warms up some around here.

Very nice. I'm playing with my stuff now to make sure it's ready when I get there.

Enjoy your visit -- and thanks for the memories, we went there back in the early 70s & enjoyed it a great deal. Way before I was into taking photography; it was early in our marriage & still using a film camera; too expensive to take photos then expecially on our budget!
I guess you can use flash but it will be difficult to get it to look like you didn't.
Maybe bounce a bit of fill that's diffused?
Barring that...I'd just up the ISO as far as I'm comfortable, open up the aperture as far as I'm comfortable to get the highest shutter speed combiniation that I thought would yield a good (not blurry) shot.
The pictures were taken in a mine with a Tamron 18-270mm and an equivalent SB800 flash. I had to watch out for water running from the roof of the mine onto the camera.

I went there with my future wife in December of 1961. We started from Long Island in my parents' Beetle. By the time we got to the Throgs Neck Bridge, it was snowing. The snow got worse and worse, but we kept going - good little Beetle. When we arrived, the people at the Caverns were amazed to see us. They said, "You must be awful desperate to look at a hole in the ground to drive all that way in a storm like this."
I haven't been there in years. Hope you post your shots here. Good luck!
