Pileated Woodpecker

Caught this guy this morning working on a Maple tree in my front yard. He's elusive, fast and doesn't stick around so I couldn't walk outside with a tripod. Shot it through two panes of glass and a snow shower, handheld. We haven't seen a Pileated Woodpecker around here for about 10 years, so were pleased about this one. Although it looks like he's going to take down a chunk of that tree.

Nice. Too bad the weather didn't cooperate and you had overcast skies. But I'd be happy with any picture I could get of one.

You did good to get this shot. Now that you know he is in the area, you can be in the lookout for him. They are hard to shoot even in the best of circumstances.

Thanks guys. I know he's in the neighborhood and now I know where he's working so I'll be ready for him next time...at least with a tripod.

Nice catch. Going by the older holes above the one he's working on I would say he's been around that tree for some time. As far as I know and have seen, only pileateds peck those elongated holes. I'm sure he'll be back.
