Looking for Teleconverter (extender) for Nikon D60

my wife loves her Nikon D60 with 55-200mm lens. She'd like a 1.x tele-extender that works on full auto mode. I've looked around and come up with nothing. Any Hogs out there with similar gear and a working extender? Thanks, G -*

Nikon tele converters won't even mount because of the protruding front element. Your best bet is trying the Kenko Pro TC.

But the 55-200vr being an F/5.6 lens at 200mm, a 1.4x TC will make your combo an F/8 280mm lens - not a good combo unless you are in a very bright light situation. You will have to stop it down to F/11 or F16 to get reasonable sharpness. But they diffraction will kick in spoiling the details. That is why slower lenses are not recommended to be used with tele converters even if they mount ok.

NIkon TCs are intended for fast (F4 or F2.8) telephoto lenses and a couple of zooms - the 70-200, 200-400. They are not intended for the broader range of lenses, or shorter focal lengths that have rear elements that can physically collide with the front element of the extender.

You can get other brands, and Kenko Pro300s are pretty good. But I would not use it on an F5.6 consumer grade zoom lens. You won't be happy with the image results and the lack of autofocus.

That being said, I would not use any TC with anything but fast teles or pro zooms. There is little to be gained.

If your tele lens is not listed in this chart from Nikon, then the lens you mentioned will not work. It might even damage your lens.

Honestly, that isn't the way to go for use with that lens. Your only option is a cheap third party option and the $135 would be better used saved for another lens, trust me.

First off, your zoom lens is low on the totem pole of candidates for use with an extender. It's just not practical. Using an extender would be disappointing in use and results would be marginal at best and THAT is if you used it on a tripod. Handheld, disappointment is almost guaranteed. Your wife might have fun "playing" with it for a day or so and then never use it.

I had the same lens on my D3100 and wanted more reach. I purchased a 55-300 from a fellow UH member for $200.00 and sold my 55-200 to KEH for $77.00. Doing something like this would probably be your best bet to get the best bang for you buck.
