Good Saturday everyone! I am excited. Got my new Dell laptop yesterday and loaded PS CC onto it. At first it mentioned some errors but then this morning PS CC offered updates and I was able to install. There was some error message about some graphics issue but PS opened - but in text format. Not the way I know it should look.

After doing some checking around I see that although the specs for this indicated that it had 4 GB AMD Radeon R5 M335 Graphics (plus 16GB DDR3L 1600 MHz Ram) it seems to actually have Intel(R)HD Graphics 520. Shader version 5.1; Open GL Version 4.4; Open CL Version 2.0.

I don't know what most of that means but was wondering if anyone had any input before I call either Dell or Costco about this discrepancy.

And is this why PS isn't working properly? Do I just need a new driver or do I need to pack up yet another laptop to send back. I really LOVE this laptop other than that. It's a Dell Inspiron i7 5000 series and a real beauty. Gorgeous display for the show we watched last night. Even a CD/DVD drive which is rare lately.

Hoping someone can help. Thanks!

I can just take it over to the Costco store for a full refund including shipping but if this can work with a different driver or whatever I'd rather not go that route. The last time I ordered from Costco they sent a better model than I ordered. I was wondering if this could be the case here, too. Thanks.

Have you used the Dell utilities to check for software updates and also used Windows Update to check for the latest drivers? If not, it is possible that an updated driver could fix the problems.

I BELIEVE that the intel graphics utilizes the system RAM. You ordered a computer with a graphics card that has its own ram. Utilizing the system RAM for you graphics may well slow your system down, while a separate graphic card with its own RAM will speed your system up.

In short, it is my belief, that you didn't get what you paid for.

The AMD Radeon R5 M335 is a low-end dedicated graphics card for laptops. It is most likely based on a new derivative of the Tonga chip and therefore supports DirectX 12, Vulkan and FreeSync. The core clock is pretty high with up to 1030 MHz, however, the bottleneck is the 64-bit DDR3 graphics memory (clocked at 1000 MHz, 2000 MHz effective). Compared to the Radeon R5 M330, the M335 offers a higher core (+40 MHz) and memory (+100 MHz) clock speed.

This is probably an integrated chip on the mother board and not a graphics card.

Hopefully not but sounds like it.

I just spent the last few hours on the phone with a Dell tech. He showed me how it has BOTH the Radeon and the Intel graphics. He was updating drivers and BIOS and everything was going swimmingly until at one point I lost internet connection and we spent the next hour trying to retrieve it. Our Verizon would not even show up as an option for connection. We even tried to connect via ethernet but that didn't work. He then had me re-set back to factory specs and will call me back in about two hours when that will be done. BTW, as I waited for the tech to answer I was able to use PS CC with no problem. It was just the first page that seemed to be all text and that I'd simply never seen before. I think this computer will be just fine. I'm just frustrated at the moment that I have to reinstall Kaspersky and PS. There are worse things in life. (-: Thanks for everyone's input.

You need a computer with a discreet graphics card, on the onboard Intel graphics GPU.

If you are interested in a serious laptop for photo editing, I have been recommending those made by Clevo and sold by Sager. These are solid, and you have your choice of graphics card on most models.

Many of their offerings have motherboards that can accept 32 gb ram, and some can go to 64 gb. They come with IPS displays, standard gamut, your choice of graphics card, many have internal space for 2 SSDs and 2 spinning drives, etc etc etc. Warranty and support are very good, and their extended warranty is a fraction of the cost of Apple's. I have a number of students using these and they are thrilled and can't say enough good things about them. Gamers buy them as a lower cost alternate to Alienware. Certainly you can get exactly what you want instead of settling for what is on a shelf, hoping that it will work.

Despite what many believe, the on board graphics capability of current Intel i5, i7 processors is more than enough for typical photo processing...unless you are working with huge Photoshop files. You might get faster processing with a separate graphics processor, or not, depending on what kind of processing you are doing, and the card.

Without studying the specs, I'm not sure. You can pretty much say that Dell ran out of the original graphics boards and put in a suitable substitute in the laptop.

Although many electronic things at Costco have been "dumbed down" by the manufacture to keep the cost lower. *(Costco has huge buying power and can ask or force the manufacture to do things like that.) This could be a result of that action too.

The model you got does say it has Open CL/GL and for several years that's the latest tech! (It allows the graphics board to process things and really speeds things up.)

Read further up in the comments and you'll see that it has BOTH graphics boards - Intel and Radeon. All is well with that. The tech was so impressed he said he was going to get this one, too.

Or the Intel chipset is on-board, as is the case with a lot of bulk-built PCs, and the Radeon graphics card which is an added feature is supposed to override it and isn't.

Current Intel processors have very capable graphics capability in the processor itself. I wasn't aware of an additional Intel graphics chipset on the motherboard. Here is an excerpt from the Intel website:

Work and Play in High Resolution
Experience visual perfection with Intel® HD graphics, Iris™ graphics1, and Iris™ Pro graphics2. Watch captivating 4k video on three screens possible, edit photos and videos like a professional, and immerse yourself in vividly rendered, seamless 3D gameplay. Intel HD graphics and Iris graphics are built right in to the processor, bringing stunning visuals to thinner and lighter portable devices, like Notebook 2 in 1s, portable All-in-Ones and desktop computers.

Some Apple laptops have 2 gpu's too. I think it's one built into the cpu and a second external gpu. The intention is to use the external gpu when the situation can take advantage of it. Using the internal gpu is more power efficient.

I wonder if it can use both at the same time.

Without knowing the precise model, it isn't possible to say if this laptop has an external card or not, some versions do and some don't.
