Generosity of spirit, time, knowledge, and creative energy describe “volunteer” Chris Allyn, chair of the Harding Township Historic Society. Chris is standing in front of the Tunis-Ellicks farm house and historic gardens (circa 1800). Located just 35 miles west of New York City, Harding Township, located in New Jersey, the most densely populated of the 50 states, is a compact rural community of 20 square miles with a rich history of volunteerism and a passionate commitment from its residents to protect the environment and to preserve the rural, historic character of the community. Over 50 years ago volunteers helped create the Great Swamp National Wildlife refuge, protecting this environmentally sensitive area from the development of a 4th New York City jetport. Volunteers continue to support educational activities and efforts that promote the conservation of the natural resources of the Refuge and the preservation of open space throughout the community. Taken with Sony RX1r II 35mm f16, 1/60 sec, ISO 500. As from camera (used a hand to reduce sun flare from backlighting.)

An interview with Gryffon,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Since I was a child. My uncles ran a Wedding photo business in their spare time. Watching them in the darkroom with the old quarter plate camera and enlarger fascinated me.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. I like combining my photography with other hobbies, walking, cycling etc.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Originality.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I have two pocket cameras a Fujifilm X100 and a Lumix LX5 and carry one everywhere with me. If there is some good light and an interesting scene I take some photos.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I try to get as good an image as I can on the camera to avoid too much processing. I do use ‘Lightroom’ but mainly for cropping and or slight adjustments to exposure and contrast.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Good photographers and good photos excite me and inspire me. Looking at Ugly Hedgehog and other photo web sites is a great help. Then I just keep my eye open when I’m out and about, the Salvation Army band in Norwich last week was an obvious subject.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Hang around a bit longer, be a bit more patient and wait for some better compositions.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I should have joined a club much earlier and talked to people about their photos.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Tripod, I like taking long exposure shots in natural light.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I mainly use fixed lens pocket cameras.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Natural light, very occasionally fill in flash.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Anything creative, lino printing, writing etc but I’d have to practice pretty hard!

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Many years ago in the East End of London, teaching at a school I would lend the children Brownie 127 cameras. They would go home and take photos of their way of life and we would put together displays in school. Their photos and their stories were fascinating.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I do occasionally put photos on Dropbox.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Keep taking good photos it helps people like me!

An interview with Bonkles,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Approximately 60 years. My Mother was my inspiration; she took a variety of subjects, mainly family members and flowers. She processed the black and white photos in the cupboard under the stairs.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have not had any formal training. I enjoy street, landscape and nature photography. At the time of leaving school (16) I considered Photography and Electronics as a career. My father persuaded me to take the electronic route despite a family member being in the film business who offered to find me an opening in the industry. My electronic career has been a major intrusion into my photographic hobby, since retirement I have tried to spend more time reviewing techniques with the aid of books and the internet.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Composition, lighting conditions and high definition methods also enhance, but the latter is not to everyone’s taste. Trey Ratcliff produces some very visually attractive stuff. At some stage I intend to experiment more with this technique. However, I am concentrating on my general technique at present gaining a better understanding of composition and why people prefer particular photos.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used the Sony A6000, the camera is very flexible, compact and discreet to use. The camera is by my side most of the time. The photo of Father Christmas, on the train trip, was one of many taken on that day. On discovering the background to the person in the suit I decided the subject matched the competition brief for the week. The light was not good but with an increase of ISO I was able to take the shot, without flash, using the Sony 16-50mm kit lens.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I post process depending on the quality of the shot with Photoshop Elements 13, using Guided or Expert mode depending on what my end use is for the picture.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
A number of Professional photographers have impressed me over recent years Trey Ratcliff and a number of other practical photographers willing to share, encourage and motivate without always wanting a fast buck from you.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Use a prime lens to provide more light.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
60 years ago is a long time, I am not sure there is anything I wish I knew at the outset, my mother was a great inspiration and got me going. All the books and tutorials can only be a guide, there are no short cuts. I have always enjoyed experimentation which I still believe is what makes us better at what we do.

9) What is your favourite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My computer, which I use to store, post process, sift out the rubbish and look back on life through the lens.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I have been reliant on the Sony kit lens since purchase of the A6000. My computer/Photoshop provides me with the ability to crop photos to cover a wider range. I am in the process of evaluating three new lenses currently, the Zeiss 16-70, 35 mm prime and 70- 200mm. I could end up with all three.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I use some old photo floods for static shots I take for a website.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I combine a number of hobbies with my photography, natural history, golf, support to Juniors golfers, walking and the Society of Golf Captains website.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Sorry no, not that I remember.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Unfortunately not, I started putting a portfolio together on one site but I have never completed it.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Share your experiences, skills and knowledge in a pleasant and encouraging manner and above all be patient with others not so familiar with the concepts.
Bonkles
