I've been wanting to get a flashlight to use for at night photography to add fill light, help with focusing and things like that. I'd love to get one with variable output that could be set very low and I'd like to get one that focuses the beam. I've looked and can't quite find anything like that but if anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Rotolight? http://www.amazon.com/Rotolight-Stealth-RL48-B-Professional-Ringlight/dp/B006NVLEDM/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1449850693&sr=1-2&keywords=rotolight

Look under telescope accessories. They will have lights for nighttime use since any level astronomer needs to keep their eyes tuned to the dark.

Another suggestion. I use the SRT7 Revenger Tactical Multi-Color LED Flashlight for night photography. It is very bright and the intensity of the beam is adjustable. In addition, you can select a red color which is great for reading data on the camera without reducing night vision. My flashlight was purchased at B & H. I noticed some of our volunteer fireman use it with the red and blue colors selected traveling to a fire. Good luck. George

I bought one on ebay called an Ultra Fire by Cree for about 12 bucks that has three strengths, the highest being over 2000 lumens. It also has a strobe and SOS. The beam can be focused. It uses one large 3.7 volt rechargeable battery but came with two so I have a spare, a regular wall charger, a car charger, and an adapter to hold three double AA batteries if you need it. It works great and I've had it for two years now. Also, I have used it to illuminate subjects for photos.

Take a look at this flashlight from FEIT. High (500 lumens) Low (365 lumens), Zoom focus, has a rapid blinking mode and an automatic SOS mode. Bright enough to burn the leaves of of a tree a block away. Uses three C batteries. I got two of them at ACE hardware on sale for $16 and change each. Go to: http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Lumens-Performance-Flashlights-2-Pack/dp/B00B7PMFLE . Coot

check out Amazon... search for strap-on head lamps...
You'll find plenty of choices, some with red leds for night vision work, some with variable focus for long range narrow beam to wide angle close up work, some with detachable lamps etc...
work hands free or hands on whatever suits your needs

I am going to do that when I get home tonight. It's a great idea. As it is I cannot find one single flashlight that will do everything I want so I may have to resort to using two of them to get what I want and having the headset style has its own desirable characteristics as well so that may be the way to go.

Ditto Costco, BUT they have a 1000 & 1300 candlepower (cp) for or about $20 each and use four 'C' batteries. The ones in the three packs use three AAA batteries are 200 cp and run down the batteries in five minutes, not good for light painting.
Hope this helps
Duane

If you have a COSTCO near they have a three pac of led flashlights made by duracell with the features you are looking for. Surefire and streamlight are the best quality, but are expensive.

Must be something wrong because my batteries are a year old and still work fine. And I use it all the time. Beam can be zoomed.

I have four, and they are all the same. Bought a two pack made by Duracell
They use four AAA and last longer, but, four Ds last much longer and three times brighter, also a Duracell.

I have used SureFire illumination tools for years. There are no hot spots in their beam pattern which is important if you want to paint with light.Their lights are expensive but can be purchased at a discount from this supplier.

I recently purchased one of the new TITAN plus keychain light. Puts out a whopping 300 lumens that evenly lights up my whole back yard. Will operate at that power for one hour using just one AAA battery.
