Nikon 24-70 2.8 lens or 24-120 f4 on a Nikon D810

Hello, I am going to a Christmas party and was wanting some opinions on which lens might be the best to take. I just purchased the Nikon D810 and only have had it a few days and haven't really had a chance to shoot both lenses. It will be indoors and have no clue about the lighting and not wanting to take a flash, so I am leaning toward the 24-70. Anyone have any experience with this lens on an 810?

I have used the 24-70 on the D610 and it works absolutely fantastic, but I use it for landscape photography and I love the detail I can get with this lens
But in your case, I would go with the 24-120 for shooting a Christmas party. I once shot a wedding using a 18-105, never had to change lenses because it covered such a wide area. Plus, if your using a flash (not the built in one) the max your flash will reach is about 120mm anyway. If you do not own an off-camera flash, I would definitely recommend one. The on camera flashes are pretty useless and should be used as an emergency only

If you don't want people avoiding you while you are shooting, leave the flash behind. A Christmas party gives your more freedom to move around than a wedding, so long lenses shouldn't be necessary.
IMHO F/2.8 trumps an extra 50mm.

My personal preference is the 24-120mm f/4 (on a D810). I do not hesitate to use ISO 6400 or even 12800, though I'd prefer 3200 or lower.
But in my case, and you will have to decide if this applies to your photography or not, the longer focal length is essential because I very commonly want to isolate a single individual, or because I choose a perspective which is available at a given location (distance from the subject) that can only be framed in the way I want with a focal length longer than 100mm. (Keep in mind that so called "sneeker zoom" is a myth, and the only choice with a shorter focal length lens would be to crop in post processing.)
On the other hand, a different style of photography than mine might be the more up close and more engaged in the action type. That is also very popular. If more than 95% of your shots use 70mm or less, go for the 24-70mm.

Take the 24-70 2.8. I love my 24-120, but it isn't the lens for that kind of venue. IMO. I shot my son's wedding reception with a 55/1.2 AI on a DF, no flash -- did everything I needed.

F2.8 for sure! If you are not close enough, who cares, the D810 allows you to crop deep and still print large.

Since it is indoors and you are not using flash I think the f2.8 would be a better option that the longer FL.

I have the 24-70 on my D810 75% of the time. The combination really works well in low light and produces great images. And as MT Shooter says it allows you to crop and still maintain excellent quality.

The 24-70 works great on any camera. It's my go-to lens for 'people' shoots.

I guess that I would go with the 24-120 f/4. I doubt the 1 extra stop would make a big difference for me.
However, the OP did not tell us if this was a small get together in a smallish space or a much bigger function in a larger venue. If the latter, flash would be a good idea with a diffuser or bouncer.
