If you're intimidated by instruction books that are beyond your realistic comprehension, here is what i did:

Been workong the last few days getting my d7100 set up. I expected a pretty steep learning curve with all the bells and whistles, but this is an interstellar leap for me from what i've been used to. So i ordered Mastering the Nikon D7100 by Darrell Young. While I understand much of it, much of it i don't and was beginning to get frustrated. So..voila..I ordered the Nikon 7100 for Dummies. Definitely more compatible for me in terms of understanding what I'm doing and why. So my thought is that once I go through the Dummies book I'll go back to the Darrell Young book for fine tuning as needed.

So, if you're having a problem setting up your new camera, any camera, because your a rookie like me, don't get frustrated. Do what I've done and admit you're a Dummy and Dummy Down. I think in the long run I'll have learned more and enjoy the camera and all its nuances to a greater extent.

I endorse what you say about the Dummy books. I have a whole set of them, including D7100 for Dummies, Windows 7, Elements 13. They are a great help for novices & experienced alike. :thumbup: :thumbup:

I use David Busch's Book on the D7100 and have also used several others as I have upgraded. I'm now using a D750..love it and used Dave's book to understand all it's features!!!

I bought David's book for my D7000. Then I bought another for my new D7200. A lot of similarities between the two books, but the new features on the camera are explained very well.
Still struggling with the wi-fi.

Let us know what you think of the “Dummies” book. Many, here, have told me to stay away from that one, but hey… if it works for you, it’s great. I was looking at it and may end up getting it, anyway.

Two others, here in this group, gave me their books they are no longer using: the book you mentioned and the “Field Guide”. But, like you, this is a jump to light-speed for me.

As a trainer, I know that humans learn in several rather distinct styles. There is probably a book written for each of them, or one or two of them, but seldom do you find a work that covers all learning styles.

In many instances, camera manuals and books about cameras start with an assumption that you understand photography to begin with. They leave out the "whys" and the "why should I cares" and the "what's in it for me", so you're left with a boring list of random facts. And the Jenglish (bad Japanese translation of English) makes it all the worse!

Digital photography is much easier to learn when you take it one control at a time, learn what that control does, learn why it is there, determine when you might want to use it, learn when you must use it, and then practice making exposures with it set at different settings, just to see what happens.

David Busch's books are the best I've seen. I got his book for my Nikon D300 and it helped a lot. But even his work is not perfect.

Overly complex cameras and awful manufacturers' manuals are a modern tradition. It's not surprising there is such a big market for after market books.

As many say, David Bush's book is outstanding. I have the book and also David Bush's Compact Field Guide for the Nikon D7100 The Compact Field Guide is a good reference I keep in my photo bag. I highly recommend it.

Go to YouTube. You'll find a lot of instructional videos that will help you with set up and explain what the various settings do. That's where I started when I upgraded from my D5000 to the D 7100.

You can purchase (for cheap) pre-defined settings profiles with spreadsheets explaining them. Great place to get involved with your D7100
