Here is an area, enlarged and cropped from the center of an image. Notice the purple area? This artifact is copping up in my images. Does that mean an area of the sensor is malfunctioning?

How large is the area? I see it, and have not seen this effect before. Does it happen with one lens? Or any lens? Does it always occur in the same place in the frame?
You might send a note with attachment to the Warranty Service Center for your camera and ask them if it is a sensor issue once everything else has been eliminated.
Have you tried cleaning your lenses as this looks to me like an oil spot in the centre of the lens, do you have the same problem with other lenses, if so you might need your sensor cleaning.
I'll keep you guys posted. Took the camera in for sensor cleaning.

If the spot is smaller then presented here, and the shot was aimed close to the line of the sun or a bright reflection it's probably not the sensor but a reflection created inside the camera beween the lens and sensor. (...with pre-digital era lenses perhaps?)

Question: Were you using the viewfinder when taking the pictures, tripod with live view, etc?
Read where light contamination entering from the viewfinder can foul not just metering, but, images at times.

IMHO Looks like reflected light on the front element of the lens. It could be glare on a UV filter if you're using one. Get rid of the filter or shade the lens or both.
Doesn't look like a sensor problem but can't tell 100% without seeing the original photo instead of the crop.

does it only occur when shooting into shadows?
I adapted an old M42 lens to my Sony A55 and when I tilt the lens at just the right angle, especially toward a bright light source as in this photo, I get the same purple area. It's a reflection, either on the lens surface or the mirror. If I tilt the lens down slightly, it goes away.
