I have been working for the past couple of weeks, trying to get the hang of 'macro' images. Of course, I rapidly hit the wall of depth-of-field, so started trying to figure out the whole focus stacking routine.
I finally have some which I am not embarrassed to show to anyone! I don't claim that these are good, but I don't think they are bad either! If you had seen some of my first efforts...
I realize that they are not technically *true* macro, so I moved to this forum instead.
They are all shot with a Canon 7D, with a Pentax 50mm macro lens. I use a ring-light to assist with focus, and the lighting comes from the camera's built-in flash, plus a speedlight standing on the table next to the sample, shooting straight up at the ceiling to spread and soften the light somewhat.
This setup lets me get decent results, without the need for more expense or fancy equipment.
I rarely say this, but I do think that they are worth viewing in download. I will post a few at a time, to avoid anyone from their eyes glazing over!
Atacamite, Azurite and Bornite crystals

Radiating starburst Erythrite crystal on matrix

Meteorite slice, etched to show the Widmanstatten crystalisation - this is only ever found on the inside of meteorites

No, just a collector of old and/or neat stuff... Some of my stuff comes from museum shops, some from eBay, and a very few I have found/dug up myself. I have a bunch of mineral samples, and a few interesting fossils. I'll be posting some more of them as I go...

This is good work, Phil, & welcome to close up. Stacking has given you a perfect dof. Great work. :D
So glad you posted these here, Phil! This is fine focus stacking, and they're beautiful shots!
