Is it just me, or does anyone else think the very small manuals that are included in a $1200-3500 camera suck? I personally would be willing to pay $20-40 more for a camera if it came with a decent manual like David Busch's or Scott Kelby's very informative books.
I fully realize you can download them from the manufacturer, however I dislike taking my laptop when I go out on a shoot, and downloading it to my smartphone is not much better than the manual that came with the camera.
I have all of my books spiral bound at Staples, and can easily fit into my camera bag, or just studying it at home, or at a park as it lays flat giving me the opportunity to hold my camera in my hands and perform the function I would like to do at the same time until I learn it.
Your thoughts please.
As are all manuals... This is not a canon exclusive but everything from a toy to a dishwasher!!! So a camera supposed to create subjective things??? Ouch!
You may have a solution... There are outfits that provide laminated instructions that describe all the functions of a camera. I do not recall the name of the company but I am sure someone here will recall it and post it.
Just found one for my camera using google.

Thanks Ron, I'm off to google as I just purchase a Canon 7D MKII and I know what I will receive in documentation. The big brown truck will be here next Wednesday. :)

Have you considered downloading the PDF version?
- You can make them as big as you like on your computer screen, or you can print it and even copy it to your smartphone.
That's what I do anyway. S-
Nikon's manuals suck as well. Hence the plethora of aftermarket books. It is definitely not you.

Yep, ordered the "Dummys" book from Amazon. It had pretty fair reviews. I know what I'll get with the body.
You dont know what "awful manuals" are.. until you see those cheap chinese engrish manuals :P
The download version (See St3v3M post above) is much better as you can enlarge the text to suit you.
I usually buy the video of that camera. Works much better for me.

I have seen foldable laminated cheat sheets for various cameras on Amazon.
Yes, manuals in general are awful. The worse is when you look up a topic, and it says, "Go to page 27 and read the section on..."
Another pet peeve: software directions are often written backwards. For example, they will say, "Open the Utilities Menu, located in the Secondary Menu, inside the Photo Menu, within the Settings Menu." I see this so often from all companies. Why not start with the first step?

My thoughts are that you (and many others) are equating "from snapshots to great photographs" with "how to operate" a camera. When you buy an automobile do you expect the owner's manual to teach you how to drive? That manual tells you how to operate THAT particular piece of equipment. Your idea of a "camera owner's manual" is one that will teach you how to compose, expose, and capture and image. Your expectations are unreasonable and your are disappointed with the results. Do you read the owner's manual for a new stove and expect it to teach you how to bake? When you understand the purpose of a camera's manual you will learn far more from it. And you might enjoy it more. GL
