I am looking for another computer. I work with Macs so a PC is out of the Question. I was wondering can you hook the laptop to a smart TV so that the TV can be used as a monitor, I like the size of the laptop for the mobility. As of right now I work off a IMAC that is showing her age and would be a backup. I also have external hard Drives so the storage is not a factor. Any thoughts

Apparently, it's possible.

You should be able to pick up a mini display port to HDMI adapter and then connect to any TV with HDMI input, smart or not. The display adapters are not expensive.

I just bought one for my Granddaughter for xmas through B&H @ $500 off. It does have HDMI and I think at the very least a cable will allow you to use the TV as a monitor. It's what we are going to do for her. My son connects all his computers (both pc and apple) to tv's for monitors. Never seems to have a problem.

I don't have a Retina Display, but I use a Sony 41" TV as a monitor for a 2011 MacBook Pro. The only thing I can find distracting is that I haven't figured out how to shut the laptop screen down when using it. I also have Bluetooth keyboard & mouse I use when it is hooked to the TV so I can turn the laptop around and not have the small screen distracting me.

The short answer is Yes you can.
Assumptions:
1) you are going to buy a MacBook Pro 13" with Retina Display with a HDMI port.
2) you have a TV that has a HDMI port.
3) you have a HDMI cable of sufficient length to connect to the laptop and to the TV.

Just remember to turn off both devices before connecting the cable to the TV and Laptop!!

Why? I never do this and I connect my laptop's HDMI port to the TV's HDMI port all the time without turning either one of them off. Have been doing this on an almost daily basis (to watch the noon news) for quite a while without any adverse effects to either device.

Just a precaution. Both my Samsung TV manual and my MacBook Pro manual suggest/recommend powering down the two devices when making a cable connection. However, in truth I like you more often than not just connect the cable with out first powering down the two devices.

Felt obliged to play it safe.
