After decades of shooting, did the unthinkable and dropped a lens. It has a wow in one of the metal slides/guides. I'm sure there is a better name for the piece that's damaged.... But the lens will drop in, but when I go to turn it, it doesn't want to rotate. And of course, I'm not going to force it. Is this fixable? Could I spend money at the camera repair shop and still not be happy with the way the lens goes on the camera. I know it's gnats ass tight...

I don't know what your question is (if there is one)!It sounds to me you need a new bayonet mount. Don't know the cost.

Guess the question is, can it be fixed and the reliability of the fix. BUT if that is what's needed is new mount. I'll start google searching , replace mount. Thanks!

You could always contact NikonUSA. I'll bet they'd know.

Nearest shop is 265 miles away. We don't all live in or next to a big city.

I did not mean to sound so flip,my apologies.

I'm only about 40 miles from a shop (Two round trips equals eight gallons of gas.),so I mail my camera to Nikon. They give an exact estimate to properly maintain my equipment. It is sometimes very difficult to diagnose necessary repairs without an inspection.

:-)

Get an estimate from a reliable repair shop. Many Nikon Repair places in this country. Just google Nikon Repair in the area you live.

I agree that this is the best suggestion; you don't want to risk the possibility of damaging your camera. You should also start thinking about the possibility of buying a new lens, because you need some way of evaluating their estimate. Six years ago, my Nikon scanner had issues, so I sent it to them; they emailed an estimate back to me (I've been on their email list ever since). I ended up buying a refurbished much better scanner at roughly the same cost of having my old one fixed. I used the first scanner for six years, and I've now used the replacement for six years (including re-scanning some slides because the replacement is so much better).

Rehess,

You occasionally hear stories, but I believe Nikon is trustworthy and mailing is relatively cheap to them or any other facility you choose. Plus, I would like to think that one could come up with an approximate value of the item to be repaired to help determine the feasibility of repairing or replacing. Dave.

Just my 2 cents. Has nothing to do with reading all the replies. Strength in same advise.

I didn't say that they were untrustworthy; often repairs simply cost more than we ever would anticipate

Yes, that is exactly what I was suggesting the OP do while the process is on-going, because that puts the whole process into perspective.

I made that remark regarding untrustworthy because some typically complain about factory service prices.
