I was out christmas shopping it was a little past 4pm the sky was clear bright blue and the moon was extremely bright.
Since the digital zoom seems to only work in auto (as far as I can tell)
I decided to try it out with the bright sky. Hand held out the drivers side window.
had to touch up with Ps because of the bright skty

Doowopa,
Nice series of moon pictures. The SX50 is a fun camera to use.

Thanks I have the SL1 also but the SX50 is always in my car. I use it more
than the SL1 now.

Very nice moon shots. The SX 50 is the camera I go to for most of my shots now. It satisfies all my photo needs at this stage of my life. No more using heavy equipment, if I can help it, although I need the exercise. Thanks for the moon posts. Digital zoom works any time, check the manual. Standard digital zoom gives you up to 200 X.

Digital zoom is greyed out on mine in every mode but auto
I've looked through the manual many times and can't find anything saying it should be greyed out, but it is.

just did factory reset and it's working.
Now I wonder what setting caused that to happen.

Glad you got it worked out. The camera has so many wonderful multi-functions so you probably hit a button, or combination of them, somewhere at sometime. Factory reset always works wonders! Always recheck the manual for any confusion. Enjoy your camera and go on a moon binge as I do.
