I'm watching a Photo Artistry video that's teaching PS. I have PS CC and some of the things the course is showing me how to do are not working when I try them. For example, it said to bring the ruler up just do a Ctrl R. That does nothing. I even tried going to View to find ruler but it's not lit up so when I click on it nothing happens.
Also, when he introduced the Shape tool he said to use the shortcut "U" and to use Shift to go to different shape options. That does not work either.
Thanks in advance to anyone with any idea as to what is going on.

You need to have a photo open and then Ruler will be available in View and the shortcuts will work.
Update: You beat me to it.
Glad you solved your problem. I would be interested in knowing what Photo Artistry video you watched and is there a link to in I could access.

Hi Waltchilds,
It's a course I bought back in July with many, many videos, cheat sheets, backgrounds, etc. It was pricey but I got a good 4th of July deal. Maybe he'll offer something similar for Black Friday. You can find everything at photoshopgrunge.com. Sebastian Michaels is the creator and he is amazing and generous with all that he keeps adding to the course. I'm not a "grunge" type person but what he teaches can be used for any type of PS you choose to do and I have to admit that some of the grunge comes out looking pretty cool. I now have a laptop where I watch the videos and have PS open on my desktop. Good luck.

I'm currently doing Sebastian's course together with another from Aaron Nace of Phlearn - both really good teachers whom I recommend to anyone wanting to learn Ps at their own pace.Look forward to seeing your results Donna.
