After much help from this community on making a decision to buy a second body, I ordered, and received, my Nikon D7100 yesterday. It is a refurbished unit from Adorama.

Curious, I uploaded the first image to a site to get the shutter count. Imagine my surprise when it came back telling me the shutter count is "1".

Brand new, refurbished camera!!??

Very likely is brand new.
It could have been a "buyers remorse" return.

If the box is open, they have to review and sell the unit as a "refurb".

I would have been thrilled with a count of 29. :-)

About a month ago I bought a refurbished D7100 from B&H for my grandson. It also had a shutter count of 1. Looked like new. Not a mark or smudge on it.

He had been wanting it for over a year. He was beyond happy.

Nothing wrong with a refurb with a count of '1' on it! Great catch.

So proud of our grandson. He loves the Lord first, kind, compassionate, and is the class photographer. He had been making do with a D40 that I gave him. I wanted to make sure he was mature enough to take care of a good camera. Not prejudiced at all (LOL), but he is a great kid.

Perhaps the entire shutter mechanism was changed out during the refurbishing. Or the circuit board was replaced, reseting the counter. Hard to tell, but it doesn't really matter. Few photographers ever wear out their camera's shutter!

The market is flooded with "Refurbs" at the moment due to the demo models coming back from the PhotoPlus show in NYC, many were handled, but never batteried up or actually used. Once they were opened and handled they cannot be sold as "New" so they are white boxed and sold as "Refurb" units. Its not at all unusual to see a refurb with no shots on it.
And the shutter count is NEVER reset by Nikon, even if the camera does get a new shutter, the shuttercount remains progressive and intact no matter what is done to the camera.

Good to know, MT. Thanks! I'll plan to buy my first full frame after one of those shows then - perhaps next year.

Lucky you. I've had similar experiences with refurbs, but never a "1."

Gee! I bought a Canon a few months back that had a shutter count of 2198. Is it wore out?

Too bad sellers don't include the SC in their ads like mileage on a car.
