Zeiss versus Canon L glass....
You better get your quote from someone else buddy. I agree that Zeiss has made great glass but they have also made glass for Sony video cameras. I have one that I wouldn't brag about.

Where'd you find a $200 difference between the two lenses?
Sony video camera huh? Consumer grade? How did that lens compare to other cameras in it's price range? :hunf:

Jason has a couple of videos explain why he has switched over to Sony MIRRORLESS cameras from both Canon and Nikon. He doesn't use Sony DSLRs however.
Gary Fong and Brian Smith however have gone completely Sony, using the full range of cameras and lenses.
Carl Zeiss makes some of the BEST glass in the world. Have been for decades.
It should be noted however, that if you want a Zeiss lens that autofocuses... you HAVE to buy Sony. ;)
Good point on the mirrorless. My bad for assuming we were talking about MILC's.
More familiar with Fong than Smith. Love how Gary Fong touts his own products when he is doing tutorials on Sony. Such a capitalist!
Was pretty sure Zeiss was the best, but to me it was proven in that JL video when he was shooting that old 39' Ford.
Learned something new about Zeiss AF and Sony. Thank you for that,
First I've heard of Jason Lanier. I'm not that impressed by what I've seen of his. I've seen much better work produced by so called "lower quality" equipment including the work of photographic masters. Best is highly subjective and is dependent upon use. While I don't question that Zeiss makes high quality lenses, I question the absolute need for such lenses that Lanier seems to tout. I find that most of the lenses I have used from several manufactures are fantastic.

He's a legend in his own mind. He tries to market himself as some sort of elite professional, while producing tripe like
this and
this that look like they belong on youarenotaphotographer.com.
If you look at the Facebook feeds of actual elite shooters like
Patrick DiFruscia or
Elena Shumilova, they are filled with world-class imagery. On Lanier's feed you don't get a single world class photo. You just get self-aggrandizing junk like
this, where he tries to make it appear that he's some sort of Ansel-like photographic celebrity that people fawn all over every time he's out shooting.
And it's all a sham. I've shot hundreds of photos better than
this one that Jason shot in the 1939 Ford video, but have yet to ever have a reaction like his. Yet somehow he fools novices into paying for his 'workshops', which appear to be nothing more than 10 people standing around watching him shoot.

Figured as much. I can't believe that people actually listen to his "advice."

I think if you saw the video you may agree on the lenses.

Like "best", "fantastic" is pretty subjective also. lol

My point was that just because a lens is not a Zeiss doesn't mean that in the right hands it can't turn out a perfectly good image.

Different subject, but a large degree accurate.

He is FAMOUS for photographing FAMOUS people.

Very interesting and informative sites. I think Smith is a master of composition and light. Minimal shadows used, but highlights look like perfection to me. Lanier on the other hand, (at least to my eye) seems to use shadows to his advantage for his style. Both produce brilliant images, but I would have to give the nod to Smith on this comparison. His head shots are arguably the best I have ever had the pleasure to view. Good stuff. Thanks.
